Fight analysis
Things are moving along for Raul Rosas Jr., and the 21-year-old is taking a step up in competition by going up against the aging, but serviceable, Rob Font.
Rosas is a suffocating wrestler, scoring four takedowns a fight, and Font has some of the cleanest technical boxing in the division. On the flipside, Rosas has miserable striking, while Font has awful takedown defense.
When we see how efficient a wrestler Rosas is, it’s a shame that his striking is so functionally behind. The only loss he’s suffered in his career came to Christian Rodriguez, who kept him off the mat and exposed his lack of striking refinement.
He is making an effort to work on his stand-up, and he does have the raw, clubbing power one would expect with such a wrestle-heavy style. Rosas is coming off a decision win over Vince Morales last March, where he scored four takedowns and compiled nearly ten minutes of control time.
Font remains one of the most technically sound boxers in the division, but has struggled sustaining momentum, as the 38-year-old is 3-5 dating back to December 2021.
While Font has fast hands, good strike selection, and uses footwork and distance management to avoid prolonged punishment, he’s been taken down 22 times over his last five fights alone. While it may seem like a big ask, he has the standup tools and experience to dominate Rosas as long as he doesn’t hit the mat.
This is a cut-and-dry fight as far as the matchup is concerned. Font’s a technical fighter that lacks stopping power, so he isn’t strong or nimble enough to keep Rosas off him. Rosas will eventually pressure him against the octagon, start chainwrestling, and Font won’t have much else to do except defend submissions.
Best bet analysis
Font’s aiming to play matador to Rosas' bull, and Rosas aims to win with control rather than aggression. Expect this fight to find its way to the mat in short order, with Rosas' relentless grappling pressure shutting Font down for the decision.
