Fight analysis
Like many other UFC fans, I’m all aboard the “Hype Van.” That said, Saturday’s bout might simply be too much, too soon for the rising prospect.
Van is a promising contender with crisp boxing and solid takedown defense, but this is a championship-caliber step up in competition on short notice. Royval has only lost to champions in his UFC tenure, and while Van may eventually reach that level, it’s still early in his career.
If Royval gets this fight to the ground, he’ll likely control the action and threaten with submissions. Even on the feet, Royval is an accurate striker whose underrated stand-up game helped him outpace Tatsuro Taira in his latest win.
Van possesses power and technique, but he’s also shown that he can be hittable. While Royval is not a knockout artist, he can use his speed and mix in grappling to win rounds.
Best bet analysis
The best value in this matchup is betting on the fight to go the distance at -185 via BET99. Realistically, the only two likely paths to an early finish are Royval by submission or Van by knockout.
However, Van boasts excellent takedown defense. Subsequently, he hasn’t been submitted since 2021.
Meanwhile, Royval has shown tremendous durability and has only one knockout loss, which was due to a shoulder dislocation against Brandon Moreno, not a strike.
This is a major leap for Van, but anything can happen over three rounds. Instead of picking a side, the best way to attack this fight is to bet it to go to a decision and leave the judges out of the betting slip.
