Buffalo @ New York preview
MetLife Stadium
Last Meeting ( Dec 30, 2012 ) N.Y. Jets 9, Buffalo 28
The first two quarterbacks taken in this year's NFL draft will square off when the Buffalo Bills pay a visit to the New York Jets on Sunday in an AFC East matchup. EJ Manuel, a surprise selection with the No. 16 overall pick, earned his first win by throwing a 2-yard touchdown pass with two seconds left in Buffalo's 24-23 victory over Carolina. New York's Geno Smith played fairly well in a Week 1 win versus Tampa Bay, but he unraveled in the fourth quarter of a 13-10 loss at New England.
The rookie quarterbacks already share one common denominator - both came out on the short end of a narrow loss to the division rival Patriots, with the Bills falling in the final seconds of their season opener. "We both lost to the Patriots and early on you don't want to get behind in the season," Manuel said. "It just adds even more urgency to this game." New York has won eight of the past 10 meetings overall and three straight at home against Buffalo, including a 48-28 rout in the 2012 season opener.
TV: 4:25 p.m. ET, CBS. LINE: Jets -1. O/U: 38.5.
ABOUT THE BILLS (1-1): Manuel has completed 68.2 percent of his passes and thrown for 446 yards with three TDs and one interception in his first two games. Wide receiver Stevie Johnson, who caught the winning scoring pass last week, has been his favorite target with 11 catches for 150 yards and two touchdowns while the two-pronged running attack of C.J. Spiller and Fred Jackson have combined to give Buffalo the league's fourth-best rushing attack at 142.5 yards per game. Defensive end Mario Williams is coming off a monster performance with a career-high 4.5 sacks, six shy of his season total with the Bills in 2012.
ABOUT THE JETS (1-1): Smith guided New York to a last-second game-winning field goal in the season opener against Tampa Bay and had his team in position for a huge upset at New England before tossing three fourth-quarter interceptions. He is completing only 53.4 percent of his attempts and his 55.2 passer rating is next-to-last in the league. The tandem of Chris Ivory and Bilal Powell rushed for 100 yards versus the Patriots after combining for only 44 yards in the season opener, but the key to the game could hinge on New York's defense, which is tied for fourth in the league in allowing 59.5 yards on the ground.
EXTRA POINTS
1. Manuel is the first rookie quarterback to post a passer rating of 89 or better in each of his first two NFL games.
2. The Jets are 7-2 at home in September under coach Rex Ryan.
3. Sunday's matchup will mark the first time in the series that both teams will start a rookie QB - excluding the 1987 strike season.
PREDICTION: Bills 19, Jets 17
