The contrast couldn’t be any more glaring this weekend as big-spending Wrexham take on cash-strapped Sheffield Wednesday, who are up for sale and lurching from one off-field saga to the next.

It’s ‘take three’ here for the Red Dragons as they look for their first win of the new Championship season, and my Wrexham vs. Sheffield Wednesday predictions signal a free-scoring response.

Check out my soccer picks for this August 23 matchup.

EFL Championship predictions for Wrexham vs Sheffield Wednesday

My Wrexham vs Sheffield Wednesday best bet: Over 2.5 goals (-125 bet365)

Ryan Reynolds knows a thing or two about thrillers, so in that sense, Wrexham’s first home game in England’s second tier since 1982 was on brand. But that 3-2 loss to West Brom leaves the Red Dragons with no points from their first two fixtures, confirming that nothing comes easy in the Championship.

Still, you could argue that the closest thing to easy is a clash with a Sheffield Wednesday team dealing with a backdrop of late wage payments and fan protests against owner Dejphon Chansiri. I expect the goals to flow at the Racecourse Ground on Saturday, and the Over on 2.5 goals has been a winning ticket in the opening two contests for both these clubs.

The Wrexham attack brings real menace, with Kieffer Moore leading the line and Nathan Broadhead ready for a bigger role. Even after former Sheffield Wednesday forward Josh Windass’ hamstring injury against West Brom, Phil Parkinson has plenty of options in the final third.

While it’s easy to look at the Owls as a perfect patsy this weekend, they outshot Stoke last time out and showed the potential to create chances for Jamal Lowe and Bailey Cadamarteri. But defensive lapses were costly in that 3-0 defeat – and conceding a goal inside the first minute surely speaks to the frazzled mood in the Sheffield Wednesday locker room.

The visitors have struggled to stem the flow of shots so far this season, allowing 39 attempts through two outings, and it could be a similar story here. Look for the floodgates to open if Wrexham get off to a flier.

Wrexham vs Sheffield Wednesday same-game parlay (SGP)

Over 2.5 goals

Nathan Broadhead anytime goal

Wrexham moneyline

Windass’ hamstring injury is expected to pave the way for Broadhead to move into the starting lineup, and there are big expectations after his summer move from Ipswich. This is an ideal spot for the Welsh forward to get on the scoresheet, even if he comes off the bench, and I’m wagering on him to open his Wrexham tally this weekend.

I’m also riding with the hosts’ moneyline. There’s real urgency for Wrexham to get their first points on the board here, and they won 16 of their 23 league contests at the Racecourse Ground last season.
