We’re in for a doozy Stanley Cup Final.

The Edmonton Oilers took care of the series opener, and the Florida Panthers will look to even it up with a Game 2 win on Friday, May 6.

Here are my top NHL picks and Panthers vs. Oilers predictions for Game 2 at Rogers Place, headlined by Cats clutch-scorer Carter Verhaeghe.

Who will win Panthers vs Oilers Game 2?

This series has back-and-forth written all over it, and Game 1 was the perfect example of how tightly contested it will play out. Florida did win the five-on-five possession battle with a 52.3 Corsi For percentage and 53.6 expected goals percentage, and I’m also anticipating Cats star Sergei Bobrovsky to continue his sterling postseason run in winning fashion.

He’s won eight of his past 11 starts with a .932 save percentage, 1.74 GAA, and 13.43 goals saved above expected.

Panthers vs Oilers prediction

My Panthers vs Oilers pick: Carter Verhaeghe Over 2.5 shots on goal (+115 at BET99)

There’s a screaming statistical correction ahead for Florida Panthers winger Carter Verhaeghe in the shots column.

The go-to winger failed to register a shot on goal in Game 1 against the Edmonton Oilers despite recording five attempts. Verhaeghe has now converted just 35.7% of his attempts into shots during the postseason, which is way below his 50.4% mark during the regular season and 47.9% rate during Florida’s Stanley Cup run last spring.

Verhaeghe has averaged a healthy 18:36 of ice time per night during the playoffs and skates in an offensive role, including jumping the boards with the No. 1 power-play unit as a primary shooter.

He’s also been a possession hog at five-on-five with a team-high 59.3 Corsi For percentage, which includes tilting the ice in his favor to the tune of a 64.0 CF% in Game 1.

Additionally, to reinforce his shoot-first style, Verhaeghe finished the regular season ranked in the 97th percentile of forwards in shots on goal.

Panthers vs Oilers same-game parlay (SGP)

Carter Verhaeghe Over 2.5 shots on goal

Florida moneyline

Sergei Bobrovsky Over 25.5 saves

Florida had Game 1 in control, and, as discussed, the Cats were also the slightly better team at 5-on-5. I fully expect this to be a back-and-forth series, and I’m anticipating Florida heading back to Sunrise with a split on the highway.

Turning to the final leg of this same-game parlay, the saves total for Sergei Bobrovsky is way too low. The Oilers have averaged 33.6 shots per home game during the postseason, and as highlighted, Bobrovsky has been incredible.

Look for the shots to keep coming early and often from Edmonton, and Goalie Bob to turn away 25 or more again in Game 2.
