Flyers vs Blackhawks Picks and Predictions: Razor-Thin Philly Falls Flat

In today's lone matchup between two of the league's bottom-feeders, our NHL betting picks and predictions lean on some of Chicago's top-end talent to help secure a home win versus the Flyers and their heavily banged-up lineup.

The Chicago Blackhawks against the Philadelphia Flyers might not be the most exciting matchup right now, but it's the only game on tonight's NHL slate.

The Flyers have won two games in a row, but are missing a ton of players due to injury. Chicago, on the other hand, has also lost two straight but should be able to take advantage of this depleted Flyers roster.

Flyers vs Blackhawks picks and predictions

Our side and total predictions are based upon our analysis of the line and total in this game. Our best bet is our favorite pick across all markets.

Moneyline analysis

The Philadelphia Flyers' season can’t end any sooner. Though they've managed to win some games down the stretch, they are currently playing with somewhat of an AHL roster due to a laundry list of injuries.

It's been a tough year for both of these teams, but they are actually pretty evenly matched. The offense has been a complete struggle for both sides, but if you look at the current roster, the Blackhawks have so much more talent than the Flyers.

Patrick Kane and Alex DeBrincat have become somewhat of a dynamic duo for the Blackhawks. Kane has quietly had an incredible season with 91 points in 75 games while DeBrincat has been an elite goal scorer, potting 40 goals and 36 assists this season.

To put these numbers into perspective, the Flyers' leading scorer is Travis Konecny with 51 points in 76 games. As a whole, the Flyers rank 27th averaging 2.62 gpg and the Blackhawks are right behind them in 28th (2.59 gpg).

Not only do the Blackhawks have the offensive edge, but they'll also have the advantage between the pipes. The Flyers are starting Felix Sandstrom, who has played just three games in his NHL career and doesn't have a win to his name.

This Flyers roster is far from competitive right now. Expect the Blackhawks to get a win on home ice.

Over/Under analysis

When you look at both of these teams on paper, the last thing you might think about is team defense. They have both been horrendous in their own end all season long, especially the Flyers who have also become known for questionable goaltending.

The Flyers rank 27th in defensive proficiency while allowing 3.58 goals against per game as well as the fourth-most shots on goal against. The Blackhawks rank 26th, currently allowing 3.57 goals against per game, while giving up the 10th-most shots on goal per game.

Not only are their blue lines poor, but this is not a highly anticipated goaltending matchup. As I previously stated, Felix Sandstrom is the expected starter for the Flyers. He is 0-2-1 with a 3.29 GAA and a .915 save percentage. Kevin Lankinen will get the nod for the Blackhawks and he hasn't been much better (6-15-6, 3.62 GAA, .886 SV%).

Neither team's defenses should be relied upon in this matchup. The game should play wide open and players like Kane and DeBrincat should be able to produce some points — sending it Over the 6.5-goal total.

Best bet

Despite Chicago’s lack of success of late, I really like the way they match up against the Flyers, especially when it comes to special teams.

The Flyers have a very weak penalty kill which could struggle against the talent of the Blackhawks. Sure, Chicago’s power play hasn’t been amazing this season, but they have been relatively average while the Flyers' man-down unit has been well below average.

We’ve only seen a small sample size from Sandstrom but he hasn't impressed us one bit. Chicago has way more talent up front in Kane and DeBrincat and should be able to take over.

The Blackhawks will want to end their season on a high note and they should be able to do that with a win tonight.
