The Winnipeg Jets currently sit in the 11th spot in the Western Conference but the playoffs aren’t out of the question for them, especially with the Columbus Blue Jackets coming to town tonight. Despite a loss to the Sens last night, the Jets are still heavy -165 home favorites.

Can the Jackets land a huge blow to the Jets’ playoff hopes tonight as heavy underdogs and a schedule advantage? Can backup Eric Comrie put in a solid performance tonight in a pivotal game?

Blue Jackets vs Jets picks and predictions

Our side and total predictions are based upon our analysis of the line and total in this game. Our best bet is our favorite pick across all markets.

Moneyline analysis

The Jets hit a massive bump in the road on their route for a playoff berth with a 5-2 loss to the Senators last night. Now they’ll try to get two points tonight with backup Eric Comrie in net as -165 favorites against the Blue Jackets, who are coming off a 5-1 loss to the Pens on Tuesday and play in Minnesota tomorrow.

The Jets are currently five points out of eighth place in the West and with just 17 games remaining in the season, MoneyPuck gives them just a 4.4% chance to make the postseason. Having something to play for doesn’t mean the Jets have the advantage tonight and in many cases like this, it can be a disadvantage.

The Jets dropped a 5-2 decision to the lowly Senators last night with No. 1 goalie Connor Hellebuyck taking the loss. The Jets were severely outplayed by the Sens but went into that game having won six of their previous eight games.

Comrie has surprisingly won four straight starts but this is still a career backup goalie with a GAA north of 3.00 over his career. He is likely the reason the market has crashed on the Jets and rocketed to the Over.

Comrie and the Jets’ 3.42 GAA in March will face a Columbus team that is 4-2 SU in its last six with those two losses coming against playoff teams in the Capitals and Penguins.

Neither team has been playing tight hockey of late as both clubs sit in the Bottom-15 in goals allowed per game over the last 30 days. Winnipeg has allowed its opponent to score at least three goals in seven of its last eight games, and in 18 of its last 20.

Even in their wins, the Jets have had to score four or more and that’s not something we’re willing to lay the juice on the -180 moneyline.

Elvis Merzlikins will be back between the pipes for the visitors tonight. He left his last start with an injury (a game Columbus won vs. the Blues), but had won three straight starts prior to that. Merzlikins is not an elite goalie by any means, but he is the team’s best option in net right now and seems to be healthy ahead of tonight’s matchup.

Getting the Blue Jackets at +175 would have been nice, but we’re still not fading the market which has steamed to Columbus and might not be done moving at even +145.

Neither team can be trusted in net tonight, both penalty kills have been brutal of late, and getting the Jets at -165 on the end of a back-to-back versus a sneaky good offensive team in Columbus has us reaching for the dog.

The Jackets have nothing to play for which can be a dangerous thing for a Winnipeg team clinging to its playoff life.

Prediction: Blue Jackets ML (+145)

Over/Under analysis

In March, the Jackets are averaging 7.27 total goals per game while the Jets are even worse at 7.42 total goals per game. These two teams have been seeing a ton of goals in their games and they’re a combined 12-6-2 to the Over in their last 20 games.

No team has allowed more 5-on-5 goals than Columbus on the season while Winnipeg also sit in the Bottom-15 in that category as well. Both penalty kills have also been generous of late. The Jackets have surrendered 10 powerplay goals over its last nine, while the Jets have given up a PP goal in eight of their last 10 games.

There is also a big revenge angle here for Patrick Laine, Jack Roslovic, and Pierre-Luc Dubois. All three players were traded two seasons ago. Roslovic and Laine both have six points over his last five games while PLD has five points in his last six.

Kyle Connor will be a name to monitor tonight as well. The Winnipeg sniper has 25 points over his last 14 games including 11 goals. His 1.79 points per game are the fifth-best in hockey over the last month.

Like the side, we’re jumping on the market movement and hitting this Over 6.5 even with the 30-cent juice.

We love two-way scoring tonight in Winnipeg, and with the Jets playing last night and Columbus heading to Minnesota following the game, we doubt we get a defensive game full of energy.

Prediction: Over 6.5 (-130)

Best bet

We're riding the biggest market mover and that’s the total and Over 6.5. We don’t trust either goalie or team’s penalty kill. Each lineup has forwards that want to make a mark on their former employer and have the skillset to find the scoresheet tonight.

Over the last 10 games, both teams have been seeing an average of over 7.00 goals per game as neither team is stout defensively, and we also believe the schedule spot for each team is an advantage for the Over.

Give us some goals.

Pick: Over 6.5 (-130)
