Dolphins next head coach favorites

Ravens John Harbaugh

Coaches with resumes like John Harbaugh has don't come on the market very often, and that might have been what prompted the Dolphins to fire McDaniel well after "Black Monday."

Harbaugh worked 18 years as the Baltimore Ravens head coach, guiding the team to a Super Bowl win in 2012 along with numerous playoff appearances and five AFC North titles.

Despite a slew of injuries this season, Harbaugh was a made 44-yard field goal away from a 13th postseason with Baltimore.

Browns Kevin Stefanski

Kevin Stefanski is a rare two-time Coach of the Year, so his name has come up early and often in the rumor mill this offseason in spite of his 8-26 record across the last two years with the Cleveland Browns.

Stefanski led the Browns to two of their three postseason appearances since 1999, winning a Wild Card game in 2020.

Seen as a quarterback guru, Stefanski could be charged with either trying to "fix" Tua Tagovailoa, or tutor the next QB1 in Miami.

Broncos Vance Joseph

Teams firing a head coach often look for a change in approach. Going from an offensive-minded head coach in McDaniel to a defensive-minded one in Vance Joseph is a logical leap.

Joseph posted a miserable 11-21 record in two seasons calling the shots for the Denver Broncos before he was handed his walking papers in 2018. He's since rehabilitated his reputation, working as the Arizona Cardinals' defensive coordinator for four seasons before returning to the Mile High City in 2024, where he's now DC of one of the most feared stop units in football.

Joseph could have an "in" with Miami, as he worked one year as the Dolphins' DC in 2016.

Recent Dolphins coaching history

It could be argued that the Dolphins are still trying to replace Don Shula, the NFL legend that walked the sidelines of Miami from 1970 to 1995.

The Dolphins have won just two division titles since Shula retired, and have not won a playoff game since 2000 (0-5).

Miami has lured some big names in the past, but Jimmy Johnson and Dave Wannstedt were unable to get the Dolphins over the hump, while others like Nick Saban left the Fins with egg on their face.

The Dolphins have also let interim head coaches Todd Bowles and Dan Campbell walk away, further adding to fan aggravation.
