Michigan’s football program is back in the national spotlight for all the wrong reasons.

Following the abrupt firing of head coach Sherrone Moore — who was dismissed and later arrested after reports of an inappropriate relationship — the Wolverines have launched a chaotic and high-profile coaching search.

Oddsmakers have already adjusted. Jedd Fisch has overtaken the board as the new betting favorite in the Michigan next head coach odds, while several prominent college names remain firmly in the mix.

Michigan next head coach favorites

Washington Jedd Fisch

Jedd Fisch brings one of the strongest blended résumés in the field, pairing a deep NFL background with impressive collegiate turnarounds.

His recent success at Washington — maintaining high offensive efficiency and talent development across multiple transitions — has cemented him as a trusted program steward.

If Michigan prioritizes experience, adaptability, and proven leadership across both levels, Fisch fits that profile extremely well.

Fisch is 12-10 through two seasons after taking over for Kalen DeBoer.

Alabama Kalen Deboer

Kalen DeBoer is a name that may be in the mix thanks to his proven ability to win at the highest level and stabilize elite programs.

Alabama’s return to the College Football Playoff under his leadership reaffirmed his reputation as one of the game’s premier tacticians and culture builders.

With Michigan seeking a steady, championship-caliber presence after Moore’s dismissal, DeBoer naturally headlines the list of potential successors.

DeBoer is currently 19-7 as the Crimson Tide head coach.

Arizona State Kenny Dillingham

Kenny Dillingham is the high-upside swing on the board, and recent results justify his inclusion.

Arizona State’s surprise College Football Playoff berth last season and an 8–4 follow-up this year highlighted his ability to elevate talent, modernize an offense, and generate momentum within a program that lacked it for years.

If Michigan leans toward a long-term offensive visionary rather than a traditional hire, Dillingham becomes a very real candidate.

Dillingham owns a 22-16 record as the Sun Devils' bench boss.

Why Sherrone Moore was fired

Sherrone Moore was fired for cause by the University of Michigan on December 10, 2025, after an internal investigation found credible evidence that he engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member, a violation of university policy governing conduct within the athletic department. Michigan officials emphasized that the relationship breached workplace rules and constituted grounds for immediate termination.

Multiple reports confirmed that the university’s internal review concluded Moore violated institutional standards, leading to his dismissal without the school owing the remaining terms of his contract.

But the situation escalated quickly.

Moore taken into custody hours after his firing

Just hours after Michigan announced his firing, Moore was arrested by local authorities in Saline, Michigan, according to the Associated Press. He was transferred to the Pittsfield Township Police Department, booked, and later held at the Washtenaw County Jail.

The arrest is connected to an ongoing assault investigation, and as of the latest reporting:

  • Prosecutors are reviewing potential charges.
  • Moore has not yet been formally charged.
  • A court appearance is expected as the case proceeds.

The investigation remains active, and law enforcement officials have not released further details.

A stunning fall

Moore, 39, had completed his second year as Michigan’s head coach, finishing the 2025 season with a 9–3 record. His firing — and subsequent arrest — marks one of the most abrupt and dramatic coaching exits in recent college football history.

What’s next?

Michigan is expected to move quickly, and with Fisch emerging as the favorite at multiple books, expect movement in the odds as the legal situation around Moore continues to develop.
