Northern Colorado vs Hawaii picks and predictions

Our predictions are compiled from the analysis of the spread and total and are indications of where we are leaning for this game.
Our best bet is the play that we like the most for this game, which we would actually put some of our bankroll behind.

Northern Colorado is coming off of a solid win over the Pacific Tigers in its season opener. The best part about it for the Bears is that they didn’t even play particularly well in that one. Northern Colorado shot just 5 of 22 from three-point range, and the Bears are more than capable of turning in a better performance than that.

Bodie Hume, who averaged 15.9 points per game and shot 39.3 percent from the outside, is one guy that can definitely step his game up against Hawaii. Hume went just 1 for 4 from deep on Wednesday, but he shot .393 from outside last season. With that in mind, expect him to bounce back against the Rainbow Warriors tonight. However, Hume won’t need to do it himself in this one.

Daylen Kountz had 22 points against Pacific last game and the former Colorado Buffaloes guard should be in for a big year. Kountz isn’t much of a shooter, but he puts a lot of pressure on the defense with his ability to get to the rim. Matt Johnson II also looks like he could be a player for this Northern Colorado team. He had 17 points and five boards against the Tigers last game, and he went 3 for 6 from deep. With Johnson and Hume, Hawaii will have to guard the three-point line with some real sense of urgency, but the Rainbow Warriors were just 208th in adjusted defensive efficiency last season (according to KenPom.com).

It’s also worth noting that Kur Jongkuch had a double-double with 10 points and 12 boards against Pacific. He looked like an absolute load on the glass and should be a huge factor against Hawaii. Jongkuch had three offensive boards last game and those extra opportunities could turn into some back-breaking relocation threes for guys like Hume and Johnson.

For Hawaii, Junior Madut is the player to keep an eye on. He’s the leading returning scorer from last year’s Rainbow Warriors team, and he had 17 points in the team’s season opener. However, Hawaii lacks experience around Madut and is a bit outmatched in the talent department in this game.

Hawaii’s home crowd should factor into this one a little, but Northern Colorado is the better team and should win here.

Prediction: Northern Colorado -2.5 (-108)

Northern Colorado’s first game saw a combined 132 points scored in a contest in which the Bears really struggled to make shots. This Northern Colorado offense isn’t nearly as bad as it played against Pacific, and it wouldn’t be all that surprising if the Bears put up something like 75 points in this game. The Rainbow Warriors do not play great defense, and the Bears are due for a better shooting night here.

The Over is 5-0 in Northern Colorado’s last five games following an against-the-spread win, and it’s also 6-1-1 in Hawaii’s last seven games overall. This game should be played with both teams right around the 70-point mark, making the Over the right play here.

Prediction: Over 137.5 (-108)

As previously mentioned, the Bears are the more talented team between these two programs right now. Whereas Hawaii has a few players that can contribute in a game like this, Northern Colorado has a handful.

The Bears also have the right personnel to give the Rainbow Warriors a tough game tonight. Northern Colorado really struggled to shoot the three against Pacific last game, but that can probably be chalked up to some opening-game nerves. The Bears have a number of guys that have proven they can shoot the three at a high clip, and they should pour it on a bit against Hawaii tonight.

Overall, it’s just hard to envision a scenario in which Hawaii ends up winning this game. The Rainbow Warriors are likely in for a somewhat rough year.

Pick: Northern Colorado -2.5 (-108)
