Trae Young will forever be tied to Luka Doncic, and not just from a skill perspective.
After all, it was the Atlanta Hawks who traded the No. 3 overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft to the Dallas Mavericks in hopes of landing their franchise cornerstone.
While Young has been an electric offensive force over the past seven seasons in Hotlanta, it’s hard not to wonder how far the Hawks could’ve gone had they kept Doncic.
But hindsight is 20/20, and Young appears ready to move on, judging by some cryptic posts on X regarding his contract extension talks:
“It’s just business…” 😂

Trae Young career trajectory
Trae Young has been in the spotlight since high school, known for his deep shooting and flashy playmaking. He starred at Oklahoma, leading the nation in both points and assists as a freshman before going fifth overall in the 2018 NBA Draft and getting traded to Atlanta in the now-famous Luka Doncic swap.
Since then, Young’s had plenty of highs, including two All-Star nods and leading the Hawks to the 2021 Eastern Conference Finals. However, his career has also had ups and downs — hot streaks followed by shooting slumps, big scoring nights followed by defensive struggles.
Now 27, Young’s still one of the league’s top offensive talents, but questions remain about whether his best years will come in Atlanta or somewhere new.
Trae Young next team favorites
Sacramento Kings
The Sacramento Kings are going against their better judgment and retooling for a run in the Western Conference, instead of trying to play the long game and rebuild.
A trade for Young would certainly give the Kings some much-needed pop on offense alongside the likes of Domantas Sabonis, Zach LaVine, and DeMar DeRozan.
With De'Aaron Fox now long gone, adding an All-Star caliber point guard is of top priority, and Young's skillset would fit nicely in the uptempo Western Conference.
Miami Heat
There is a lot to like about the Miami Heat as a potential landing spot for Young.
The addition of Young would pair one of the best pick-and-roll guards in the league with an athletic big man in Bam Adebayo, who could cause defenses fits.
Not to mention, his playmaking ability will open up space for the likes of Tyler Herro and Andrew Wiggins to elevate their game to places they've not yet reached consistently.
It's unlikely the Hawks would trade within the division, but the Heat are one to watch.
Orlando Magic
The Orlando Magic appear to be everyone's sleeper team in the Eastern Conference.
They've got a solid core of players led by Paolo Banchero, but they are still missing that one consistent scoring threat and primary ball handler.
Cue, Trae Young.
He would immediately upgrade their playmaking ability, and level up their ability to knock down triples — a stat they ranked dead last in last season.
Much like the heat, a Young-Banchero pick-and-roll combo would prove effective and free up their perimeter shooters.
