Where will Kevin Durant play next season?

The San Antonio Spurs continue to be the betting favorites to land the NBA superstar, but the Miami Heat have made a big move up the odds board on Friday afternoon.

According to Shams Charania, the Heat, Houston Rockets, and Minnesota Timberwolves appear to be the three teams that have Durant's full attention.

Spurs San Antonio Spurs

Bill Simmons has been wrong on plenty of news topics before, but my job is to report the news as it comes my way.

According to Simmons, a deal may already be in place for the San Antonio Spurs to land Kevin Durant:

From a basketball perspective, this trade scenario could make a lot of sense for both parties, but it would favor the Spurs if they could get the cost right.

Durant is a cheaper alternative to Giannis Antetokounmpo, and it likely won't cost the Spurs their No. 2 pick in the upcoming draft, which would give them two windows to compete.

The first window includes packaging a couple of future first-rounders to send Phoenix's way. If Durant slots in nicely between a healthy Victor Wembanyama and helps the Spurs reach the postseason immediately, those first-rounders may be low enough to now hold too much value.

The second window comes in the post-Durant era.

Keeping that No. 2 pick and drafting a future difference maker like Dylan Harper (Rutgers) or V.J. Edgecombe (Baylor) will give the Spurs another piece of the puzzle on a very cheap contract.

Heat Miami Heat

From a lifestyle perspective, there's a lot to like about going to play the final few years of your career in South Beach.

From a purely basketball perspective, I'm not sure this makes the Heat any closer to a title.

At age 37, Durant is slowly becoming the 1B option as opposed to the main character, and with the Heat void of any real superstar talent around him that can take up that role, I'm afraid KD will just be spinning his wheels once more.

Could he turn back the clock and win a scoring title and possibly the MVP? Sure. But I don't think the juice is worth the squeeze, if you catch my Florida drift.

Rockets Houston Rockets

The Houston Rockets are one of the major players for Durant, and with good reason. They own three future Suns picks (this year’s 10th overall, alongside their 2027 and 2029).

Suns' general manager, Brian Gregory, is on record as saying "he wants to get back control of his picks, starting with this year's No. 10".

So, that leaves two willing trade partners and a player who has shown interest in the Rockets in the past.

Whether the Rockets are able to gradually lower the price for KD remains to be seen, but there's no denying he'd fit in nicely alongside Alperen Sengun and Amen Thompson.

Timberwolves Minnesota Timberwolves

It's tough to call a team with the third-shortest odds a "dark horse," but that's exactly what the Minnesota Timberwolves are. They've been to the conference finals in back-to-back years but haven't been able to get over the hump in either one.

Would adding Durant give them the extra boost they need to finally break through? Possibly.

With Anthony Edwards being a Durant idolizer, the chemistry may be instantaneous, and it could take the Western Conference by storm.
