The New York Yankees will look to continue rolling when they play the second of a three-game series against the Los Angeles Angels tonight.
The Yankees are one of the hottest teams in baseball, with just one loss in their last eight games. They keep it rolling tonight but view the prop market as holding our most significant value in the game.
My Yankees vs. Angels predictions break it down here as I bring you my MLB picks when the two teams meet Tuesday, May 27.
Yankees vs Angels prediction
My Yankees vs Angels best bet: Carlos Rodon Under 17.5 outs (+130 at DraftKings)
The Los Angeles Angels are unique in that they are one of only three teams in baseball that have a below-league-average chase rate but a top-ten strikeout rate.
That presents an interesting conundrum when facing a chase-reliant pitcher, such as the Yankees' Carlos Rodon, as they do tonight. We've identified some commonalities in his starts when facing teams that chase at a below-average rate, which has led us to our best bet: Under 17.5 outs at the attractive +130 price point.
Carlos Rodon has been lights out over the past month with a 1.9 ERA and back-to-back starts, allowing just one earned run combined. The one blimp? A road start (a place he'll be tonight) against the Oakland Athletics, where he allowed four earned runs in narrowly completed six innings. That strong form has been the key contributing factor in driving this price.
That continued a trend against the teams mentioned above, namely those with a below-average chase rate. On the season, Rodon is averaging 5.94 innings per start against that group, though. That number goes to 5.42. He's also seen an increase in those starts in metrics like hard-hit rate, WHIP, and ERA, adding validity to the belief that they are not just coincidental.
Tonight, he faces a team with the 11th lowest chase-rate in the sport.
That mere aspect would make this appealing at any price point above +110. It verifies what the metrics say: Rodon is an elite strikeout pitcher, but he can struggle with hard-hit balls and a walk rate in the bottom 30 percentile of baseball when he doesn't induce chases on his pitches outside the zone. But that's not all to like here. The BatX agrees with this play and for a different reason.
We should continue to expect some positive regression from the Angels offense this season, rating them the 8th unluckiest offense in the majors. It also notes that the Angels are well-equipped to take advantage of the aforementioned hard-hit issues that Rodon still has in a homerun-rich environment because of heavy winds and a small park size.
I expect the New York Yankees to win this game on the strength of their offense, but it will not be clear sailing for Rodon throughout, and I would play this to my projected number of +110.
Yankees vs Angels same-game parlay (SGP)
A nice non-correlated same-game parlay gets us a strong +300 payout on just two legs here.
Two things are true in this game, Rodón is going to labor but his matchup isn’t as bad as the one his counterpart is facing. The difference is one of those elements has been factored into the market pricing while one hasn’t.
The Yankees should be able to run up a nice crooked number on Angels lefty Tyler Anderson tonight. He’s a southpaw with a barrell rate issues that leans on the fastball heavily. If you’ve read this season, you already know why and if you haven't, let’s just say the metrics back up the Yankees taking advantage of a pitcher like that.
It certainly helps having the best fastball hitters in the league who also own the highest collective barrel rates.
