KBO Picks

ESPN Game of the Day: Lotte Giants (10-12) vs Doosan Bears (14-8)

Probable Pitchers: Dan Straily (1-2, 2.86 ERA) vs Chris Flexen (2-0, 3.12 ERA)

We were oh so close to the Waffles, I mean Giants, coming through for us as underdogs yesterday. The Giants led the Bears 3-0 at one point and 4-3 heading to the bottom of the ninth. But like so many times in the KBO, the Giants coughed up the lead and before the Bears walked it off in the 11th.

Now the Giants hope they can avoid the sweep as they hand the ball to former Major Leaguer Dan Straily for the series finale.

Straily’s first KBO season has started well, pitching to a 2.86 ERA with a 1.27 WHIP in his first five starts. He is also coming off of 6.1 innings of three-hit, shutout ball against the Lions. The Bears’ excellent lineup will be a tough task, but Straily has faced some tough opponents this year.

The Bears counter with an import starter of their own in Chris Flexen. The 25-year-old former Mets draft pick is also finding success in his first KBO season with a 3.12 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP.

This is a tempting spot to take an Under, but the total is very low, and while the starters are great, it’s hard to know what we’re going to get from the bullpens. We’re betting pitching is the story early in this one. Here’s hoping we don’t get burned by another first five inning Under.

Pick: First 5 Innings - Under 5.0 (-125)

NC Dinos (17-5) vs Samsung Lions (10-13)

Probable Pitchers: Chang-mo Koo (3-0, 0.62 ERA) vs Chae-heung (3-0, 1.88 ERA)

The Lions are roaring after a second consecutive win over the league-leading Dinos. The win was the Lions’ fifth in the last six games, but Sunday’s matchup will be as tough as they come, as they have to go up against arguably the KBO’s most dominant pitcher in the Dinos’ Chang-mo Koo.

Koo has looked nearly unhittable so far this season. The 23-year-old lefty owns a 0.62 ERA and 0.66 WHIP in his first four starts and that includes two games against the league’s top two hitting teams in the Bears and Wiz.

However, the Lions will put their best foot forward as well, as they hand the ball to Chae-heung Choi. The 25-year-old southpaw has been the Lions’ best starter this season, pitching to a 1.88 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP.

Even with the Lions bats on fire during this run, Koo is just on another level right now. We know this bet burned us yesterday, but we’re back on the Dinos by a couple of runs.

Pick: NC Dinos -1.5 (-125)

KT Wiz (9-13) vs Kiwoom Heroes (12-11)

Probable Pitchers: Je-seong Bae (1-1, 1.07 ERA) vs Seung-ho Lee (0-1, 5.23 ERA)

It’s been a disappointing start to the season for the Wiz thanks to their inconsistent pitching. They just haven’t been able to maintain the leads their offense builds for them.

The Wiz lead the KBO in batting average and are second in runs per game, but are second to last in team ERA and lead the league in blown saves. Luckily for the Wiz, they send their best starter to the bump in Je-seong Bae. The 23-year-old right hander has pitched to a 1.07 ERA with a 1.30 WHIP this season.

Meanwhile, Seung-ho Lee gets the ball for the Heroes. The 21-year-old lefty has a 5.23 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP.

We are taking the Wiz’s bullpen out of this equation and we like them to have a lead after five innings.

Pick: KT Wiz -0.5 First 5 Innings (+130)

LG Twins (15-7) vs Kia Tigers (12-11)

Probable Pitchers: Tyler Wilson (1-2, 4.24 ERA) vs Drew Gangon (2-2, 2.70 ERA)

Bonus play today! Yup I love Saturday night/Sunday morning KBO so much I thought I’d throw in another pick. (And well, I really like the value with this play hahaha).

The Twins have played very good baseball this so far, and have quietly sat in second place for most of the season and they’ll go for the series win when they face the Tigers in the rubber match of their three-game set.

The Twins have good value in this one thanks to starter Tyler Wilson. The import starter has been a bit unlucky this season, but still has an excellent WHIP and is coming off his best start of the season. On top of that, he has dominated the Tigers in his KBO career, pitching to a 2.77 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP in eight starts against them.

The Tigers send import start Drew Gangon to the mound, who has been excellent in his first KBO season. But we’re siding with Wilson’s experience and the fact the Twins have a slight edge in hitting.

Pick: LG Twins (-125)
