PrizePicks announced Thursday that it secured gaming licenses in Puerto Rico and Maine, making it the first licensed daily fantasy sports operator in Puerto Rico.

The Atlanta-headquartered company’s announcement confirmed that it now has fantasy contests in 47 U.S. jurisdictions and plans to continue expanding.

Key Takeaways

  • PrizePicks this month changed to peer-based competitions in California.
  • PrizePicks teamed up with KLUTCH Sports this week to help its brand and company development.

“The largest daily fantasy sports operator in North America” is now available for customers in every state except for Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, and Washington.

“We’re grateful to the Puerto Rico Gaming Commission and the Maine Gambling Control Unit for their partnership and support throughout the licensure process,” said PrizePicks senior vice president of legal and compliance Adam Packer.

Expansion is par for the course with PrizePicks, which last month announced it had struck a partnership deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The company earlier this year also teamed up with the Houston Astros and San Diego Padres, teams that both play in states that do not have legal sports betting industries.

The company noted that despite its rapid growth, responsible gaming was still a “key focus.”

It also stated that earlier this year, it became the first fantasy sports operator to receive the iCAP accreditation by the National Council on Problem Gambling for its efforts involving responsible gaming.

Nothing or something?

The company’s expansion into Maine and Puerto Rico comes on the back of it switching to a peer-to-peer model in California. The decision, announced earlier this month, was a response to the state’s Attorney General claiming he believed that fantasy sports contests were illegal.

PrizePicks’ peer-to-peer contest, Arena, was also mentioned by name in Packer’s announcement of the expansion into Maine and Puerto Rico.

“We’ve seen tremendous engagement with Arena across the country, and we’re confident that momentum will carry into these new jurisdictions,” he said.

The specific reference to Arena could prove to be significant. The gambling industry as a whole is experiencing constant shake-ups, such as prediction platforms becoming potentially viable alternatives to sportsbooks, and state regulators cracking down on sweepstakes and fantasy platforms.

To symbolize the ever-changing market, Underdog Sports, one of PrizePicks’ largest fantasy competitors, applied for a traditional sports betting operator’s license in Missouri. Underdog only currently offers traditional sports betting odds in North Carolina, whereas its fantasy contests are legal in 32 states and Washington, D.C.

Missouri’s sports betting market is expected to launch by Dec. 1.

KLUTCH joins the mix

PrizePicks announced Tuesday it had secured KLUTCH Sports Group, which represents LeBron James and various superstar athletes, as a strategic brand advisor.

The partnership will see KLUTCH provide input on PrizePicks’ development, marketing, and relationship-building. It also aligns the company with one of the most powerful sports agencies in professional sports.
