PowerPlay, a sportsbook licensed by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO), confirmed its expansion into Alberta ahead of the province’s upcoming online sports betting and iGaming launch.
Key Takeaways
- PowerPlay is active with sports betting odds and more than 1,200 games in Ontario.
- A company official said the platform was “local” and built with knowledge of what Canadians are looking for.
- Ontario generated $4 billion in revenue in 2025.
Alberta is modeling its market launch after Ontario’s, which occurred in 2022. Ontario is now home to more than 40 operators with more than 70 sports betting, online casino gaming, and poker platforms.
With another major opportunity on the horizon in Alberta, PowerPlay made sure that it was available for launch day.
“July 13’s go-live date is locked, and so are we,” said Bill O’Brien, PowerPlay’s head of sportsbook. “Our product, compliance, and customer experience has been built with this launch in mind.
“Alberta players will have a fully live, full-loaded platform from Day 1. Our focus remains on delivering a best-in-class experience built on integrity, innovation, and responsible play.”
The upcoming launch will feature several of the most prominent names in the gaming industry, including FanDuel and DraftKings.
PowerPlay is nowhere near the size of those two gambling giants, which generated $7.5 billion and $6.1 billion, respectively, in 2025 revenue. However, a company official said it has a clear distinction as a “local” sportsbook “built around” what Canadians want.

July 13 is when Alberta players get the experience they deserve, from a brand that was built for them.”

PowerPlay focused on Alberta launch
PowerPlay’s confirmation of its upcoming Alberta sports betting and iGaming launch was predated by several regulatory milestones in 2025 and 2026.
The platform previously published its operational standards and began its registration process. It will be eligible to register customers and accept wagers once it receives official licensing and completes its onboarding.
PowerPlay noted in an announcement confirming its expansion that it will focus on providing a “differentiated product experience,” headlined by three characteristics.
The first of those is data-driven marketing. Without the same bankroll as its competitors, it will rely on analytics to lead its promotional efforts.
Another core focus will be placed on operational efficiency, ensuring resources are used effectively.
Finally, PowerPlay will champion responsible gaming and protect customers from the behavioral and financial dangers associated with problem gambling.
PowerPlay launched in 2018 and has been registered for an Ontario licence since 2022. It offers sports betting odds and more than 1,200 online games, including slot machines, table games, and a live casino. Ontario just capped off a record year, during which legal operators combined to produce over $4 billion (nearly $3 billion USD) in revenue.
