The NBA and WNBA, in collaboration with the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG), announced a campaign to fight problem gambling and prediction market trading.

Key Takeaways
  • The campaign extends the promotion of responsible gaming from the NBA to the WNBA.
  • A new ad spot will be created and shared through social and linear platforms.
  • The NCPG provides resources and tools for individuals who are or know someone struggling with negative behaviors.

The campaign emphasizes that strong knowledge over teams and players won’t absolve individuals from financial losses at prediction platforms and sportsbooks.

While sports betting and predicting have become common forms of entertainment, the NBA, WNBA, and NCPG emphasized in an announcement of the campaign that these should never be counted on as reliable methods to generate income. They also warned that both activities can put fans at risk of endangering their finances, mental well-being, and relationships if they act irresponsibly.

The campaign will launch during the 2026-27 season, which begins next Tuesday. It will include a new advertisement that will be distributed on social and linear platforms through NBA- and WNBA-owned and partner channels.

“As the ways people engage with sports continue to evolve, it is important that fans understand the risks associated with putting money on sports outcomes,” said Scott Kaufman-Ross, NBA Head of Media Distribution and Partnerships.  “Through this campaign, we want to help fans make informed decisions, understand the risk and, if they choose to bet, trade or anything similar, that they do so responsibly.”

The initiative adds to the NBA’s previous responsible gaming efforts and relationship with the NCPG. It also extends the promotion of responsible behaviors to prediction platforms and WNBA fans.

Legalizing sports betting in 2018 allowed predictions and prognostications to be put to the test under the pressure of winning or losing money, depending on the accuracy of the wager. The rise of prediction markets expanded the availability of ways for individuals to win or lose if they could correctly guess what would happen next.

Additional details about the campaign, including creative direction and launch date, will be announced at a later time.

NBA, WNBA encourage responsible gaming

The NCPG is America’s leading nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting responsible play and reducing the effects of dangerous behavior. It does this through advocacy, prevention, education, research, and support.

As part of the campaign, the NBA and WNBA will encourage fans who are either struggling with negative behaviors, or interested in educating themselves about preventative measures and dangers, to utilize the NCPG’s resources.

“Helping our fans make informed decisions is central to this effort,” said Colie Edison, WNBA Chief Growth Officer.  “By bringing this campaign to WNBA audiences, we can reach more fans with practical guidance on understanding financial risk, setting limits and recognizing when and where to find support.”

“Awareness is an important first step in preventing gambling-related harm,” added Derek Longmeier, President of the NCPG Board of Directors.  “We’re proud to support a campaign that brings greater visibility to the risks of sports betting and prediction markets and puts education at the forefront, helping fans better understand the potential for harm and the resources available to those who may need help.”

Fans of both leagues may obtain information and access to resources by visiting ResponsiblePlay.org. Individuals who are already struggling or are worried about a loved one can call or text the National Problem Gambling Helpline for free at 1-800-MY-RESET 24 hours per day, seven days per week.
