Ahead of kickoff of the fifth Sunday of the NFL season, Kalshi announced the adoption of protected NFL player markets.

Kalshi is one of the largest platforms in the prediction market space. Its introduction of protected NFL player markets comes as sportsbooks have increased how much player prop injury insurance they've offered customers this season. Traditional sportsbooks have offered similar protection in the past, with a few of the key books now asking users to opt in to injury protection for full games.
Kalshi outlines protected markets as “versions of select NFL player markets that include an early exit payout.” If a player plays in the first half but doesn’t return to the game in the second half or overtime, a protected market settles at the fair price prior to the opening kickoff.
Of course, if a player already reaches his target in this protected market, it will pay out as normal. And if a player does not see the field, a protected market will settle at the fair price.
This protection only applies to positions in a protected market, Kalshi notes. Standard NFL player markets don’t include protection, even if the player does suffer an injury in the game.

Here is how customers can tell if an NFL player position is protected, per Kalshi:
“Whether a pick is protected depends on the market your order was placed in. In the Kalshi mobile app, protected picks show a shield icon on your combo in the Combo builder, in your portfolio and on your order confirmation. The protection details sheet lists picks that are protected or can be protected, so it doesn't confirm that protection is on.
Protection can't be added to a position after you trade. Protected and standard markets are separate markets, so turning protection on for a new combo doesn't change combos you've already placed.”
Protected NFL player markets can also be used in conjunction with Kalshi’s combo builder. If any of the picks in the combo can be protected, Kalshi will show a toggle with a shield icon to offer protection.
