I would start with a line of 10 or maybe 15. Four numbers to start with say 10 10 10 10.
I use three sets of these numbers. Line one, two and three.
Your play is the square root of your bank. Your example would be like say 31. So you could start 15 15 15 15 and be good. I prefer to knock it down five just to start modest. If you hit a bad streak and you are betting to win it can get pricey. Once you flip it twice, then increase it by five; 20 20 20 20. Hope I answered your question. It comes down to betting to win an amount vs, just betting a dollar amount.
So if your line is 10-10-10-10 for all 3 games to start a series, but let's say you need to bet 30 to win that first 20. If you lose you add 30 to the end of the 1st line. If you win you would erase the end 10's casue you won 20. Correct, right?
What if you're betting just a dollar amount, not to win.
So, on a 10-10-10-10, you'd bet 20. If you win, say it brought you 15. How do you then adjust the line? If you lost, I guess it's as simple as adding 20 to the end of line one.

To answer the second question... If you risk 20 and won 15 then you would still cross out the first and last 10 as usual. So you get X-10-10-X. I have seen this method in practice and I do not like it. The risk method, in my opinion, only makes sense if you bet on dogs often enough to make up for the juice you lose when betting the fav. For example, risking 20 on a fav to win 15 and betting 20 on a dog to win 25.
BTW, I'm not an expert but I do have some experience with the labourchere. Hope I helped.

Play it to WIN and use the next to last option where you split the bet and drop half. Sometimes it will make your lines long but they dollar amounts are going to be reasonable and besides when you clear the line you have 100% of your losses back plus your profits when you bet to win.....It has made a big difference. Even those people who play big favorites or buy points in NBA can now use the Lab..safely and not have to worry about dumping 17 units on a 3 game loss.
