How to bet futures with your bankroll

Never really messed with them much but want to start. Whats the best way to go about it.  Betting 1% - 3% of my bank roll just seems very small for a bet that last 6 months.  Guess my question is do most people have two different bankrolls. A futures one and one for everyday bets.   so like $1000 for futures and $1000 for everyday.  Just curious on best way to go about it and what percent of bankroll is ok for futures, probably will only make 5 to 20 futures a year.
