Sounds beautiful. Most beautiful, clean beaches ive ever seen, and I'm in SW Florida. Jet black sand, crystal blue water. So i was there on a "mission trip", but we were in a village on the top of the mountains, where the gangs have since taken over and we cannot go back. Malaria is definitely an issue, and yes, they were horrible. Didnt matter what time of day. We needed 40% deet minimum. But again, we were basically in a remote jungle where most people did not have working electricity and roofs are made of a few tree branches and corrugated metal panels. Oh, and dont wear anything red
so there are still gang controlled areas over there ?
regarding the mosquitoes i am a bit concerned , malaria , would you recommend a vaccination ?
oh and thx for the dont wear red warning , i never do , but will my wife and the group of friends joining make aware of the issue

Gangs arent like what they used to be in the huge cities. They've been pushed out to poor, rural areas where we were. MS13 was everywhere. We even had an encounter with a guy from MS13. New Prez took over there and made a huge push against gangs, so getting a ton better. You'll be fine even if you do wear red, but I wouldn't in the capital.
I'm sorry, I was incorrect. Malaria I guess was eradicated in 2021 there, which is shocking to me. It wasnt when we went in 2019. It was terrible at the time. So I guess that answers that question lol.
Are you hiking or any trips like that? You'll be fine. Just dont drink the water or wear flashy things in crowds

yes , i am aware of this giant massive high security prison .
My sister in law's husband's family comes from El Salvador , they say it is now absolutely safe , someone throws a gang sign even in a remote town has the attention of the authorities and they will immediately hunt them down
not sure but i read that El Salvador is now considered one of the safest countries in the world

I cant imagine it is nearly as safe as western Europe. It was considered the murder capital of the world through the 2010s. Huge military policing now, but still unrest from the severity of the hardcore crackdown in violent crime. 100x safer than 10 years ago, forsure

But again, we were in La Libertad. Idk if it is still that way, but when we went to the capital, there were military on every single street corner with ARs and ski masks. Never seen anyone without them on. If gangs recognized a military policeman, theyd find them and their families. It was wild man

Ask your in-laws about it sometime haha. Sounds like I'm lying or a movie, but man, it was a good experience. Made you thankful for where you live and what we have.
You'll be on the coast though, so no worries. We were in Teotepeque, which was in and surrounded by MS13 and Barrio 18.
