The Canadian Open appears to have found a new home at Osprey Valley golf course near Toronto (TPC Toronto). This write up may be a little shorter than usual, primarily because this course just isn’t that interesting on paper. This is a venue that we have not seen on the pga tour. This course is a brute measuring out at just under 7,400 yards, which is very very long for a par 70. While players will have to deal with a ton of long iron shots which increases difficulty, everything else about this golf course is pretty bland. Will explain where I think players can separate on this golf course below.
TPC Toronto seems pretty simple off the tee from a handicapping standpoint. With how long these holes are, wide fairway landing areas, and rough that shouldn’t be near as penile as we saw last week at Muirfield village, I suspect players that are very long off the tee will be starting on 2nd base. Most of these holes are straight, long, and relatively flat. There is really no positional aspect to this golf course so I will certainly be looking for players that have a lot of length off the tee who will consistently have shorter approaches into these greens. This is not necessarily a requirement for me as I do think the rough and bunkering here can create some minor challenges and players ultimately can separate with elite long iron play, but length off the tee is definitely preferable at this venue.
As mentioned above, there is going to be a ton of long irons into pretty large green complexes with most approaches coming from 175+ yards. I think the most reliable way for players to separate on this golf course is by dialing in the long irons. While the difficulty of these shots is certainly in question with how big and flat the greens are, the best long iron players for the week will still have the most birdie looks. I will be weighing recent approach play and long term long iron play above anything else this week.
I think there may be some minor difficulty around the greens here with some chip shots into perched up greens and some green side bunkering that is pretty unique and potentially challenging. In the end these chip shots are still into flat greens and probably not a problem for most of these guys. With that said I will be looking at sand saves this week as there are plenty of green side bunkers that may present some challenges and will be lightly weighing around the green play. I think this tournament could potentially be won with the putter. Big greens and simple approach shots should result in a high greens in regulation %, the more greens that players are able to hit the more value I put into putting. The Canadian opens of the past have allowed for scoring typically finishing anywhere from -17 to -22. I expect no different this week and players will have to make quite a few birdie putts to contend.
Ultimately the ideal player at TPC Toronto is long off the tee, in form on approach and good long iron players, and good bunker players with putting upside. There are some great comp courses to look at this week as well in TPC Craig Ranch, Quail Hollow, and Vidanta Vallarta. These are all golf courses that are very long with relatively low missed fairway penalties and require a ton of long iron approaches. Players that have good history on these courses should like their chances this week on a golf course that should play extremely similar. Played Robert Macintyre and Taylor Pendrith on open, both players with above average length off the tee, great long iron players, and have had high end success on some of the comp courses im looking at, will be back with more

You are a braver man than I haha. All joking aside it seems like his ball striking is kinda trending back up but I am willing to stay on the sidelines until he proves it to me. In theory this should be the kind of course he likes.
