THE HAGUE, Netherlands (TNND) — President Donald Trump is joining NATO leaders in the Netherlands on Tuesday to participate in a two-day summit with the world's largest security organization and discuss a potential defense spending boost.
His appearance comes just days after he decided to strike three Iranian nuclear sites and hours after he said Israel and Iran "don't know what the f*** they're doing" when a ceasefire was violated.
The conflict is likely to take the spotlight at the summit, similar to the G7 summit in Canada, where Trump left early due to the growing crisis in the Middle East.
The war in Ukraine will also be discussed at the summit as Rutte insists it remains a vital issue for NATO, and that the allies can manage more than one conflict.
“If we would not be able to deal with ... the Middle East, which is very big and commanding all the headlines, and Ukraine at the same time, we should not be in the business of politics and military at all," he said. "If you can only deal with one issue at a time, that will be that. Then let other people take over.”
NATO members have increased military spending in recent years, with the threat of Russia looming.
But Trump wants to see more from NATO’s other members, with Russia’s war against Ukraine now in its fourth year.
NATO was created in 1949 to provide collective security against the Soviet Union.
