In president Biden's address to the nation a couple days ago he tried to address this and he's correct but far too much angst in the political spectrum over the past 7 years to change it anytime soon.
The only thing I can figure that might possibly bring red v blue somewhat closer together (though never close) would be an attack DIRECTLY on the US that in effect threatened all citizens almost equally! COVID was such a threat, but in retrospect it appears to have divided us even more, between those who preferred caution to protect everyone's health versus those who just don't give a damn if it means some inconvenience...so that failed.
Threatened RUSSIAN expansion in Europe (communism/fascism/TERRORISM) - nahh, too many Americans seem to sympathize with the fascist PUTIN (most simply because he opposes Biden) and refuse to acknowledge the lessons from the last century in Europe.
A military attack by acommon enemy - one that the overwhelming majority of Americans agree is a direct threat of severe harm to Americans - could finally force us to come together (at least partly) red & blue in a united front to defend our very lives! But this seems VERY UNLIKELY to happen........ so the divisions will remain.....And if the CONVICTED FELON rapist/racist/Fascist whose constantly repeated lies about his election defeat last time has completely exasperated the divisions, is re-elected, then the divisions will grow exponentially worse...
