tired of felons telling owners what to do the felons work for the owners
This is nothing new. There has been conversation about this for a few years now. Are you American Indian by chance?

Correct.
My CLV team is seeking feedback about changing the Indians team name. I like "Cougars" for the alliteration, but I don't think that will be a popular choice.

Pretty amusing that Nike tries to take moral high ground.Would be interesting poll to take of sweat shop workers who find Nike logo offensive. Maybe it should be changed?

I've never gotten the idea that somehow naming your team the Redskins, Seminoles or the Indians is derogatory. Maybe someone of American indigenous blood could enlighten me.
In Minnesota, there's a ton of Norwegian blood, and I have ancestry from Norway....no one is standing up and complaining about the Vikings' name or mascot. It's never entered my mind that somehow a football team name is derogatory towards my ancestry.
Those that migrated to California during the Gold Rush, they're not complaining about the football team being called the 49ers.
Bird lovers, or animal cruelty watchdogs are not complaining about the Eagles' or the Ravens' team names or dog lovers having their team called the Bulldogs.
So, I am missing something, for sure.

For Indigo999 and others who may not know, this is from Wikipedia:
A controversial etymological claim is that the term emerged from the practice of paying a bounty for Indians, and that "redskin" refers to the bloody scalp of Native Americans. Although official documents do not use the word in this way, an historical association between the use of "redskin" and the paying of bounties can be made. In 1863, a Winona, Minnesota, newspaper, the Daily Republican, printed an announcement: "The state reward for dead Indians has been increased to $200 for every red-skin sent to Purgatory. This sum is more than the dead bodies of all the Indians east of the Red River are worth." A news story published by the Atchison Daily Champion in Atchison, Kansas, on October 9, 1885, tells of the settlers "hunt for redskins, with a view of obtaining their scalps" valued at $250. For C. Richard King the lack of direct evidence does not mean that contemporary Native people are wrong to draw an association between a term that empathizes an identity based upon skin color and a history that commodified Native American body parts.

The practice of scalping was also done by Indian warriors when confronting mostly Caucasion settlers or the American army.
I suppose the basis of this is the intent. In naming the Redskins, it was not meant as a racial slur, but of the connotation of a mighty warrior, of which the American Indians can be proud.
Are we to re-name the Indians and/or the Seminoles as well, and if so what is the rationale? We are in the middle of political correctness overkill.
I suppose I could say that I resent the idea of a Viking being portrayed as a marauding, nomadic ruthless killing machine and take it as a personal insult. Maybe we should have everyone be like Mister Rogers and his neighborhood, kind, sweet and slightly effeminate....the type that wouldn't harm a flea. The Minnesota Mister Rogers' Neighborhoods.
The Vietnamese welcome those that raped and pillaged their land, where 3 million of them were killed in an invasion of their country by a foreign army, mainly the USA.
North Americans get along fine now with Germans, Italians and Japanese despite the fact that atrocities took place on both sides in WWII. We aren't apologizing to them or them to us, or saying that having a Polka Days festival is racist or whatever.
Similarly atrocities took place on both sides in the settling of America, apologies have been done, and at some point life has to move forward. Most Indian tribes now are wealthy from the advent of casinos on their land, and good for them.
We have recognized our sordid history better than most countries and admit our errors. After living in another country for most of my adult life, I can tell you that America is much, much less racist than other countries are.
Everyone in the USA has a chance to make something of themselves and various cultures seem to do it better generally than others. You never see an Asian revolt or even a Mexican demonstration...by the second generation most new immigrant families have succeeded if they want to, so it saddens me to see things become a war zone on the basis of the belief that one race believes they are hard done by.

Just read that the Edmonton Eskimos, after collaborating with the local Intuits have decided to keep their name, so obviously if it was very offensive, the Edmonton club would have changed their name.
if you wish to do the "right thing", have one representative of the 7 most prominent Indian tribes locally get together and ask for their consensus opinion on whether the name Redskins is offensive to the Indian nations.
I would certainly not change the name because some espn or fox person states that it is offensive....take it to the source and get their opinion.
In the same way, if the Cleveland or Florida State organization have misgivings of their team name in this day of political correctness reach out to the Indians in a cordial and collaborative manner to get their opinion.

Indigo999 ... I completely and wholehearted agree with your post #12 ...
How the F*%K is a team name derogatory ? It should in fact be an honour ...
But hey, I'm from Sydney Australia, what the F*%K do I know !!!

Dogbite, back to Cleveland. If they're going to change the name I don't think you have to go very far and make the "Tribe." the official name. It's not race specific, goes back to the days of Rome and is used to describe segments of many other cultures. Everyone already knows who that is, it's a brand for Cleveland baseball, from a marketing standpoint it makes sense. I'm sure there might be a few detractors but it's politically correct and not offensive to any particular race.

HAHAHAHAHA!!!
This is hilarious! I never knew that, but I can't say I'm surprised. I wonder what the collective o/u is for the entire league in any given year. If one team has an o/u of 8, then the entire league has to be over 150.

Six arrests but that is dame close. Still, what does that have to do with changing the name of the Washington Redskins? First, it's the Cincinnati Bengals, not the Redskins. Second, it's not players who are pushing for a name change. Third, the frequency of legal incident for NFL players is less than that of the general population. So who are the real felons? And what are yoi really trying to say? The "owners" in the NFL are slightly different than say, the owners of a construction business. And the players are more than schmucks swinging hammers. The players are the league. There is no product without them. Therefore, in certain ways, they wield equal to and even surpassing power than that of owners. What do owners really own? A logo. Most of them don't even own the fields they play on.

Naming your team the Vikings, the Vandals, the Celtics, it not the same as naming a team the pale faces. Or even simply the whites. Seminoles, like Utes, they are atleast geographically correct names of actual tribes. Braves... Indians... Redskins, Warriors, ect. It'd be like calling a team the Orientals and having a Ninja, or a Samurai as a mascot. Couple with that how marginalized Native Americans have become. Look at us. If you had a team called "The Americans", well, we are a proud and thriving people. We'd be like, "Yeah!" but to a Native, after everything they've been through, only to have to look at "The Cleveland Indians"? How often do you even see Natives just doing normal stuff outside of the Res?
