(but i will anyway now cause you were a meanie)

the question was: does the afl need a revamp?

    my answer     NO

    why?:
cats v pies tonight. a round24 clash that has no bearing on the ladder going into finals next week will pull a crowd as big as any state of origin game. whats there to revamp there?

last week cats v swans. the line was -40 odd in the cats favour. swans won by 13 points. so upsets are still happening. whats there to revamp there?

3-4 weeks ago the crows were playing shocking footy. sacked their coach (who imo wasnt all that bad- but his time had definitely come) and then start playing really good enjoyable footy to watch. proving that a team who apparently needed a 'revamp' just needed a change of scenery to compete again. therefore proving theres plenty of time to show your list has promise keeping your fans excited. whats there to revamp there?

last year west coast finished wooden spoon (last on the ladder for all you league fanatics). this year they are TOP4. what does that say? imo it shows a club always has the offseason to make themselves a threat again. whats there to revamp there?

this question was posted during a week were 1st was playing 16th 2nd were v'ing 13th etc etc. what was the line for monday nights nrl game? -20 or some shit? does the league need a revamp cause the worst team in the league is clearly inferior to title contenders? not at all!!

lets just say in a league game where a combined score of 40-50 is the norm and one teams gets done by 10 points (ie. 30-20). the losing team here has only managed to score 66% of the the winning teams margin. now lets take that percentage to AFL and the score was 100-66. looks like a blowout doesnt it? but in retrospect its the same percentage difference so is the league game a blowout?? u tell me!

in footy its a lot easier to score than league/union hence the scores are a lot higher and the chance of a blowout is a possibility. and once again this year the top 2 have been punishing teams (which created this debate). but please remind the dickings STORM were producing? (while they were cheating) they were blowing teams out left right and centre in a greater percentage than cats and pies have been this year (maybe not v GC and port- but two teams with a weak roster. happens in all codes)

these are my reasons JT for not believing the afl needs a revamp. its just a different style of game in which the score can fluctuate due to the fact you get 6points a goal and a goal can be scored 50 metres away.

if you need to have a SoO to attract mass fans, where u get the best players who are playing the game together to pretty much brawl (some kiwis who play for NZ play??!!?!? please.... were they born in NSW or Q?) and the afl only needs to put 2 club teams (who of course have a strong supporter base) together to get the same crowd. then i believe the question should be: does the NRL need a revamp to make it more a spectacle instead of an eye sore.

these are my reasons JT for not believing the afl needs a revamp. its just a different style of game in which the score can fluctuate due to the fact you get 6points a goal and a goal can be scored 50 metres away.

if you need to have a SoO to attract mass fans, where u get the best players who are playing the game together to pretty much brawl (some kiwis who play for NZ play??!!?!? please.... were they born in NSW or Q?) and the afl only needs to put 2 club teams (who of course have a strong supporter base) together to get the same crowd. then i believe the question should be: does the NRL need a revamp to make it more a spectacle instead of an eye sore.

I'll follow rooboy's lead here and leave you to enjoy your NRL.  Amateur competition that should be confined to the suburbs.

Your hatin on AFL displays a definite level of insecurity on your own part? Maybe you realise deep down that pro AFL opinions in this have been cogent and well thought out, the League Lovers have offered little except for bashing AFL and ignoring their own code's shortcomings.

    Good day Sir.

just thought I'd post once more for the likes of Ace

R24 attendance of 304,766 takes final 2011 attendance to 6,525,071 - the best year in the game's history and beating 2008 tally of 6,511,255

26 games in '11 (25 MCG, 1 Etihad) drew at least 50,000 - the most ever in a season of 50+. 7 games in 2011 drew at least 80,000 - most ever

AFL betting is much more lopsided just because of the nature of the sport.  More men on the pitch, a bigger ground, and a longer game = better teams have more chances to dominate and pull away.

    It's not rocket science.

It's why upsets in NHL Hockey is a daily occurrence but upsets in a sport like test cricket are not.  Bottom feeders beat top-tiered teams in hockey all the time, but you're not going to see Afghanistan take it to India in a test series.

    Just my two cents.

Then again, my $8.00 call on the Swans over Geelong a couple weeks ago was bloody brilliant!!!!

Unfortunately, I told my mate to play it as I didn't have the balls to.

that's a garbage comparison -  you're not going to see Afghanistan beat India in cricket because the former doesn't put anywhere near the same resources, you name it into the sport compared to India.

What we're talking about here is a gigantic pool of the very best AFL players (the only AFL players) in the world and yet they're not achieving a consistently competitive competition.

It's got nothing to do with 'the nature of the game' or any other excuses you AFL fans choose to roll out. Afterall, the NRL used to see blowout scorelines on a regular basis (take a look back through some old premiership tables and season results before the turn of this century) until the policing of the salary cap became a priority.

Yeah, I do know that the salary cap revamp did wonders for the NRL.  I am not as keen on what the salary structure for the AFL teams is like.  I do know that total AFL club profits for a single club for an entire season is less than a single NFL all-star player's salary, so it can't be too much.

What's the gist of the current AFL salary guidelines now?  There is no cap?  Spend what you want?  Sorry for being so ignorant on this, it just never came to my attention before.

Rostos you can't argue with this point. Channel 9 NSW gets some games in but what about the other states. Foxsports NRL games  get good coverage because there is less NRL on free to air than the AFL has. Keep in mind AFL is shown on two channels in all states so the need for Fox to watch AFL matches isn't as great unless you are a die hard AFL fan. There are also more commercial radio stations covering AFL than NRL around Australia.

Of course channel 9 will get more people watching Fox for NRL in NSW compared to say VIC. NSW is a NRL state with AFL only really taking off when the Swans were establish prior to that nothing. By nothing I mean we had local teams such as East sydney, Petersham etc that have played for the last hundred years but nothing professional like the NRL had. Even rugby was more established than AFL in that period.

HOH it is around $6.8 Million so yeah not all that much.

The salary cap is needed in the AFL because imo it risks becoming like the English Premier league where top teams are decided on who has more money. The salary cap has also meant that teams have all gotten a good go at winning the premiership. The bad thing is that these teams have then been good get punished by not being able to pick up as many good prospects in the draft. Catch 22 but again imo better than most money wins.

I am going to say it again. The AFL is seeing lopsided games because of the introduction of Suns and GWS and the AFL's position on getting them as many good picks as it can at the expense of established clubs. Throw in some poor recruiting and not managing the player list and you have you Richmonds, Melbourne, Brisbane and Port's.

ps. Anyone remember what the Bunnies were like when they were having $$$ problems ?

All what i am saying is that out of Fox's top 100 rating shows this year, 80 have been NRK games.....I mention channel 9 because they get first hand pick of the best games of the round...

Fox get the scraps....even then NRL is putting a dent in the AFL games in terms of ratings....Imagine if Fox got first pick? Dare i say 95 of the top 100 shows on Fox will be NRl games

But Rostos channel 9 has the friday night game live. The rest are games that have either already finished or about to finish....... on free to air I mean. Foxtel carries the live NRL broadcasts whereas with the AFL you can have channel 10 or 7 showing live games as well as Fox.

I don't dispute that NRL is Foxtel's money earner just saying that there is more to this than meets the eye............ sorry for the Transformers reference

    absurd call!!!!

well foxtel next year are dedicating a whole channel to AFL (you can watch special K (karmichael) &  izzy on there is you want ). so taste. where is the NRL channel? (there aint gonna be one)

channel 9 in perth have NOT shown 1 single game live of NRL all year. and you now whats more of a laugh they DONT even show the GF live (which IMO is a joke as i DONT hate the sport). you wanna know the reason why? its cause they get better ratings showing other shit. 'BETTER RATINGS'.

    your kidding yourself.

anyways this is a massive agree to disagree thread. we will never see eye to eye. but please dont kid yourself by saying no.1 rated sport in australia cause its just NOT true.

    absurd call!!!!

well foxtel next year are dedicating a whole channel to AFL (you can watch special K (karmichael) &  izzy on there is you want ). so taste. where is the NRL channel? (there aint gonna be one)

channel 9 in perth have NOT shown 1 single game live of NRL all year. and you now whats more of a laugh they DONT even show the GF live (which IMO is a joke as i DONT hate the sport). you wanna know the reason why? its cause they get better ratings showing other shit. 'BETTER RATINGS'.

    your kidding yourself.

anyways this is a massive agree to disagree thread. we will never see eye to eye. but please dont kid yourself by saying no.1 rated sport in australia cause its just NOT true.
