Sifting through article comments/twitter, more people sound outraged than not, and deservedly so. The award is not defenseman with the most pts in the league, it is for best overall defenseman. To me, Suter blows Subban out of the water in terms of overall defenseman and it's not even close.

I'd like to hear some arguments as to why this is a travesty. I am sure there is a case for Suter winning, I thought he would win too lol
But when you say things like Suter blows Subban out of the water as an overall defencemen I have to wonder what you are watching. So be sure to point out whether you are talking about this season alone or throughout their careers. I mean considering Subban already is close to Suter in goals for (10 less in almost 400 games fewer) your opinion of Subban's play in the defensive zone has to be very low considering offensively Subban is without a doubt better.
That kid Krejci who dominates everyone he plays against in the playoffs had his toughest series against PK. Coincidence? For you, probably. But that is just a snippet of how is defensive play is underrated. Last year, when he got over a minute more of ice time on the penalty kill, they finished number 1 or 2. This year, with less responsibility, they finished 23. Coincidence? Again, for you probably. So you see it might be time to start respecting PK's play in the defensive zone. He's no Chara that's for sure. But he is not a liability like some wish or think him to be.

The biggest reason I thought Suter would win was because of how much he played compared to PK. I thought Therrien's mind boggling use of Subban would cost him the Norris. The lower amount of games played also would hurt.
There might be some validity to creating a new award for defencemen because defensive dmen have no shot at winning the Norris.
Karlsson won last year because of the huge gap in points between him and the 2nd dman. Imagine if a dman was that much better defensively than the next best dman..he would still not have a chance at winning the Norris.

It's weird actually having a discussion on the Norris. I'm so used to it being air airmailed to Lidstrom's house every year in June.
You can make a case for Subban, as well as Letang and Suter. Personal preference I suppose. I would tend to pick the stronger player on the PK as my personal vote.

Wiggins - you bring up some extremely fair points. Maybe "blow him out of the water" was a bit drastic, I'll give you that. I guess when I am evaluating defenseman, I use the eye test over numbers unless one of them blew the other out of the water. (maybe the phrase applies better here.)
What I saw from Suter down the stretch was absolutely phenomenal. I don't have the numbers in front of me but the dude seemed like he was playing 30+ minutes every single night the last 10 or so games. Anchoring a below average blue line as well is pretty impressive. PK had a lot more help back there than Minnesota had and I simply look at Suter as a flat out workhorse defenseman who makes minimal mistakes.
With that being said you do make a good point about defensive defenseman and the award. Personally I just see the Norris as an award that is a defensive award and players should be judged completely differently than we typically judge other awards on. (cy youngs, mvp's etc that are completely numbers based)
By watching the two play and using nothing more than the eye test, PK is not the lockdown workhorse defenseman that Suter is. In todays numbers day and age, it's a flawed argument, but it's how I view a defensive award like the Norris.
