I am looking for some feedback regarding hockey stats. What are the most telling stats in hockey that can predict winners and losers?
Well you need to look at many things. I put a great deal into the last 5 games played. Take a look at the PP and PK %'s. Also how the goaltender has been playing.
There isn't one single thing or two you can look at. It has to be a complete approach.

I normally check the PP & PK % as well. Another one I tend to view is SV% and SOG +/-. I just want to be able to sift threw the stats that really do not mean much vs. the stats that are very telling.
Others opinions should help me view some things I may have dismissed before

Those are two very good stats to look at also.
Personally I look at the games and do a fast "beta" check. I will knock a few out, right off the bat. I see the matchups and know what team will be using speed.....a trap......take all 30 foot slapshots......Not take a shot over 10 feet, looking for that highlight reel pass.
Then I will dig into the numbers and dig up some gems. Actually the gem part will be the team totals and maybe a game total.
When it boils down to it for the most part I will look at the schedule the night before and tell you the teams I want without looking at a single stat. But I eat, live and breathe the sport. I have Sirus radio channel 208 playing all the time. I have the streaming of NHL live from NHL.com on every single day.
But I use the stats to back what I like and sometimes there is something there that knocks me off a pick. And of course the team totals I mentioned before.
You have to draw the line of how much juice will you lay. My magic number is -140. I will not lay anymore than that, but only a rare time. Now this is for games, not season totals or series prices.

I would say that's the "big three" plus any injury considerations. ![]()
