While I'll be doing the family thing all day I wanted to inform you all that Glen Hanlon has been fired as the coach of the NHL worst Washington Capitals. He is replaced on an interim basis by Hershey Bears coach Bruce Boudreau. Now they ust need to fire McPhee!!!! The Caps are off to their worst start since 1981-82.

i understand the frustration of das kapitals' partisans but the sad thing IMO is that from my admittedly distant view of things i thought for the most part they played hard for hanlon...
most nights he seemed to have his team ready to go; they almost routinely were/are outshooting opponents (9-4 edge in 1st period vs mylanta last night) indicating to me at least a significant territorial edge (SOGs tho not always being an accurate portrayal of "scoring opps") plus a group showing up to play with some jump and enthusiasm...
unfortunately they aren't blessed with enough "finishers," and unless they got all-world goalkeeping they were in trouble...
not sure how this team can be expected to play any harder or better for gabby boudreau; of course, you never know, gabby's an enthusiastic guy and maybe he has a motivational miracle or two up his sleeve...
mcphee on the other hand must have pictures up his sleeve...have to believe he's on seriously thin ice now...something had to be done, of course; those empty pews speak volumes but if you ziggy the GM, then obviously hanlon's gone anyway because he was mcphee's hire, and a new man in the front office is going to want his own guy behind the bench...so the obvious first move is to gas the redhead, and now the onus shifts in full onto mcphee...
it's a tough business, and it won't get any easier 4 george...the vultures are circling

BK, I agree with you. and when it comes down to it, I'm a Glen Hanlon fan. Obviously something needed to be done, and I was hoping they went the route of the stars and kept the coach, but trashed te front office. McPhee needs to go. Fans have been calling for his head for years. I like Hanlon and I'm not overly excited to see him go. but....something had to be done so I"m not too upset either. they aren't gonna fire the GM and VP in the middle of the season. Hopefully McPhee is gone before the 08 draft.

I don't think it is all Hanlons fault either. He is a good guy and will land on his feet somewhere. Also, even though I'll be rooting for him, I don't think Boudreau is the answer. He is an AHL coach. Not sure where you go from here. Do they go out and get a guy like Hartley? Is Bruce there for the rest of this year no matter what the result. If so, aren't you in a way folding the season on Thanksgiving? Way to early to give up IMO. I disagree with the opinion that this team showed up night after night, hell they didn't show up for b2b periods. BK widow you are right to say that SOG stats can be very misleading. This is the case with the Caps, they may be getting "shots" off but not many are legit scoring chances. Many, many shots are simply easy shots into the goalies chest, nobody in front of the net and showing no puck possession in the offense end. I think the players liked Hanlon as a guy but didn't at all play hard for him or like his job depended on it.This team has some talent on it. I like a lot of the pieces but they just aren't molding into a team.Maybe that the style of play Hanlon ask from them just isn't what suits the players skills that he had.Just a hunch but I would bet that this team picks up the scoring starting tomorrow night.

Goon - I hear that Hartley is on his way to Russia to coach. I don't think he's the answer. He's a very fiery guy and I'm not sure that a team stocked with young, inexperienced players need some guy in their face at all times.
I feel like they did play hard for Hanlon, I think I disagree with you on the talent level. I simply think this team is overmatched night in and night out, because they don't stand a chance talent wise.....especially on the blue line. And I credit that to the awful job done by McPhee over the past 6 years or so.
Regardless, I think this season is beyond lost. The Caps haven't had a 5 game winning streak since 2000, and stand at 6-14-1. Lets see what Boudreau can do. At this point there's nothing to lose, IMO. I know it sucks losing him from Hershey, but I guess that's the life of an AHL fan. He's won in the ECHL and the AHL, so I think he at least deserves a shot at parlaying that into NHL success. The one thing I fear is that he will not succeed in Washington, b/c lets face it, its a daunting task. And if that's the case I don't wanna see him tossed aside, especially b/c he had a great thing going in Hersey.

We knew coming into the season that the D-men were an issue and well we were right. As far as the rest, we really view things different.I'm not saying this team should be talking about the Cup but an 8th seed should be "do-able" with this team. I see less talented teams all over the league who manage to win some games or at least play well. I honestly don't think that teams like Fla,Nash,Leafs or Dallas have better hockey players on their rosters. I think that Boudreaus' job will be to try to get this offense to work which is the problem here I believe. The entered this year thinking they would be able to score and that would get them some wins.Nobody thought they would be an elite defensive team winning 2-0 games but we hoped they would be able to score some goals and pick up a few 4-3 type games. It just hasn't worked out that way.

my point was simple: hanlon IMO had his team ready to play on most nights...i know they went thru a streak of games in which they outshot opponents early in nearly every outing BUT at the same time weren't scoring goals...
that's a good reflection of your point about them not showing up in b2b periods...when a team works hard early in a game and is not rewarded on the scoresheet (either due to poor finishing by its own shooters, or by excellent goalkeeping by the opposition), it erodes confidence among the entire group...
the tendency in that event is to let down...
in any event, this organization has an awful lot of work to do

Goon - I'll let you know of any tickets I'm not using. I still plan on going to a lot of games, in fact I'm taking my wife to the Canes game tomorrow night, but I'd definitely give you the tickets before I let them go to waste.
I think there is a lot of talent on this club, but I also think there is a lot of misconceptions. For instance, I know you like Kozlov, and I think he's a waste of space and talent. And I know you really like these young kids, but the only one to prove anything so far at this level is Gordon, IMO. How are we getting outclassed so badly, so many nights in a row, if we have as much talent? How can we be 1-7 in our last 8 vs Florida if we have as much talent?
And I guess you can say the reason is Hanlon. So, I guess there lies the issue. If one believes we have the talent necessary to win, then it's the coaches fault we're losing. If one believes we do not have the talent to win, then it's the GM's fault. and that's the boat I'm in, the boat that reads McPhee must go!!!!! I'm not saying you're wrong, maybe we do have the talent to win. But if that's the case, shouldn't things turn around a bit now that Hanlon is gone?
Regardless, I hope you and your family had a wonderful holiday.

I will admit that I was wrong on Kozlov, I really thought they would get more out of him. Hanlon played the offense to conservative. You will see a difference now. Boudreau will have them work to keep the puck in the offensive zone as much as possible. It is what he wants from his teams. Keep the pressure on the other team all the time.Force play. The scoring will pick up, I promise. Up to this point, I agree with the Gordon statement but Steckel, Laich and Green are NHL players.Maybe not super stars but can play at the NHL level.Flash is a bust. The Caps will turn it around.
