    Since both teams get possession regardless if the receiving team scores first how does it benefit you in anyway to receive the ball first?

    Only reaon would be what Romo suggested, to let your defense get rest---but 49ers d looked spent on that last drive anyway so didnt matter

    because the 9ers would get the ball back if KC had been forced to kick a fg and then the next score wins the game - according to the new playoff OT rules

    The point is u play defense 1st so u know what u need to score if the other team scores 1st and if that team does not score all u need is a FG to win....

    Only reason I can think of was for the NineRs' defense. They had been on the field for awhile at the end of regulation.

    @p42

     well now that I'm understanding it, it's because if the other team matches your score, then next score wins.  So the receiving team has an advantage.

    I still think deferring is better.

    Exactly. Stop them on defense and kick a field goal. Although, it didn’t matter…49ers weren’t stopping Mahomes in OT.

    They should have taken the ball second.....the second team knows if they need to go for it on fourth down, which the Chiefs took advantage of.

    No point unless your defense was just on the field for last possession and gassed. No thinking went into this Superbowl OT  I'd rather know what I have to do on offense the advantage is going on defense first.

    Their programmed to take the ball first and didn't adjusting to Super Bowl Overtime rules , they only had two weeks to prepare not enough time for dummies .

    Yea, I didn't know they changed the rule where a TD doesn't win it. That was stupid by Shanahan to take the ball first.

    Yea, I didn't know they changed the rule where a TD doesn't win it. That was stupid by Shanahan to take the ball first.

    @Ufo2112

    was it stupid? quite the opposite. had the chiefs not won it with a TD, the niners would have gotten the ball back for a second possession

    Both teams get a chance to score but a touchdown wins the game. Teams can trade field goals, but the first field goal doesn’t end the game

    @Mangowoman

     You're missing the point, the Chiefs couldn't have won it with their first possession if they scored a TD...they changed the rules. Just like college, you defer, if the other team scores you get 4 downs because you know what you have to do.

     TD does not win the game on first possession.

    @Jerseyboy89

     The main reason is simple. If you score and then are matched by your opponent you now have the ball with a chance for a walk off win.

    "knowing what to do" means nothing only more pressure. I see bettors all the time who like betting on 5 win bowl teams to win the last game for the 6th win and it hits no better than 50% of the time. if you receive and score and they match Im told when you get the ball back and any score wins the game so advantage receiving

    Exactly...its almost making me wonder if Shanahan knew the new rules. With this new rule, just like in college,  you defer. Its a no brainer.
