from my week 11 2008 trends & things thread >>>

the performance of all the teams coming off their bye week during the 2006-2007 season only

There were of course 32 teams.
Byes took place between weeks 3 & 9
Week 4 was the first week where teams played a post-bye game
Week 10 was the last week where teams played a post-bye game

16 of the teams were set a favorites
16 of the teams were set as underdogs

    The spreads for the favs : -10, 7, 5.5, 6, 3, 4.5, 3, 8, 7.5, 5.5, 16, 1, 3, 3.5, 10, 9 ( 12 of them higher than 3 )
The average spread for the favorites >>> - 6.4

    The spread for the dogs : +1, 1, 3.5, 7, 13, 4.5, 6, 6.5, 1, 16, 9.5, 5, 13, 3, 6.5, 10.5
The average spread for the underdogs >>> + 6.7

    Results : ( 16 favs / 16 dogs )
Overall teams coming off a bye won 19 games & lost 13 SU

    Favorites : ( 16 total )

    Favorites won 11 games SU & ATS ( 68.75 % )
    Favorites won 1 game SU & lost ATS ( 6.25 % )
    Favorites lost 4 games SU & ATS ( 25.00 % )

    Underdogs : ( 16 total )

    Underdogs lost 8 games SU & ATS ( 50.00% )
    Underdogs lost 1 game SU & won ATS ( 6.25 % )
    Underdogs won 7 games SU & ATS ( 43.75 % )

    The dogs that won outright overcame spreads of + 6 , + 6.5 , + 5 , + 13 , + 3, + 3, + 13
    The favs that lost outright blew spreads of - 3, - 4.5, - 7.5, - 1

Notes : Once again , we see the Favorites winning and covering at a high percentage with 11 out of 16 favs covering the chalk for a 68.75 % winning !
If backing the Underdog when coming off a bye week , it proved worthwhile to take them straight up ( ML ) to win the game as nearly half of the games played by these dogs were won outright !

Teams coming off their bye week last 3 seasons
    A total of 96 games ( 3x 32 )

    Favorites : ( 50 total )

    Favorites won 36 games SU & won ATS ( 72.00 % )
    Favorites won 4 games SU & lost ATS   ( 8.00 % )
    Favorites lost 10 games SU & ATS  ( 20.00 % )

    Underdogs : ( 46 total )

    Underdogs lost 24 games SU & lost ATS ( 52.17 % )
    Underdogs lost 4 games SU & won ATS ( 8.70 % )
    Underdogs won 17 games SU & ATS ( 36.96 % )
    Underdogs tied 1 game SU & won ATS ( 2.17 % )

    Notes :

Having now tracked 3 full seasons , this trend merits a very close look for the upcoming 2009-2010 season

Favorites covered their spreads at a very high rate making them a good bet laying the points ( 72.00 % winners )

As for the Underdogs , the best bet on them proved to be a ML bet as  a high 36.96 % of them won their games outright . Compare this with taking the points worrying that the dogs would lose , but cover the spread ( 8.70 % )
The average spread for the Underdogs was + 6.7 in 2006 &
    + 5.96 in 2007-2008 combined

Think you can predict the 2009-2010 NFC champion ?

There have been 8 different teams representing the NFC in the Super Bowl last 8 years .

Compare that with 4 different teams representing the AFC in the Super Bowl last 8 years. ( NE 4X & Pitt 2 X )

Let's look at their record ( NFC teams ) the year of the super bowl appearance and their record the prior season.

Finally, their record the year following their Super Bowl apprearance

    2008-2009 Arizona Cardinals ( NFC West 9-7  )  after an 8-8 season
    ???

2007-2008 New York Giants ( NFC East 10-6 )  after an 8-8 season
went 12-4 after SB appearance losing  in divisional round

    2006-2007 Chicago Bears ( NFC North 13-3 )  after an 11-5 season
went 7-9 after SB appearance & missed the playoffs

    2005-2006 Seattle Seahawks ( NFC West 13-3  )  after a 9-7 season
went 9-7 after SB appearance losing in divisional round

    2004-2005 Philadelphia Eagles ( NFC East 13-3 )  after a 12-4 season
went 6-10 & missed the playoffs

    2003-2004 Carolina Panthers ( NFC South 11-5 ) after a  7-9 season
went 7-9 & missed the playoffs

    2002-2003 Tampa Bay Buccaneers ( NFC South 12-4 ) after a
     9-7 season
went 7-9 & missed the playoffs

    2001-2002 St Louis Rams ( NFC West 14-2 )  after a 10-6 season
went 7-9 & missed the playoffs

The Super Bowl loser trend :

    2009-2010 Arizona Cardinals ( - 7 ? ) : vs SF 49ers

    2008-2009 NE wins vs KC 17-10 SU & loses ATS ( -16 )
    2007-2008 Chicago loses @ SD 3-14 SU & loses ATS ( + 7 )
    2006-2007 Seattle wins @ Detroit SU 9-6 & loses ATS ( -6 )
    2005-2006 Phil loses @ Atlanta 10-14 SU & loses ATS ( -1.5 )
    2004-2005 Carolina loses vs GB 14-24 SU & loses ATS ( -3 )
    2003-2004 Oakland loses @ Tenn 20-25 SU & loses ATS ( +3 )
    2002-2003 St Louis loses @ Denver 16-23 SU & loses ATS ( -3 )
    2001-2002 NYG loses @ Denver 20-31 SU & loses ATS ( + 7 )
    2000-2001 Tennessee loses @ Buff 13-16 SU & loses ATS ( -1 )

    1999-2000 Atlanta loses vs Minn 14-17 SU & wins ATS ( + 4 )
    1998-1999 Green Bay wins 34-19 SU vs detroit & wins ATS ( -9 )

So, the significance lies in the streak ATS for the Super Bowl loser  in their first regular season game after their loss.
it stands now at 0-9 ATS.
During this streak , these teams are 2-7 SU , but two of those wins are in the last 3 years.
It is significant to note that the SB losers have been scheduled to play on the road in 7 of those 9 games, though both of those home games reulted in an ATS loss.

The impossible to predict NFC South >>>

The only division not to have a losing team during the 2008-2009 campaign has been known for having a last place team surge ahead the following year to grab the division lead.
Atlanta nearly pulled it off last year , but Carolina held on .

For the 2009-2010 season Expect New orleans to make a run at it !

    2008-2009 :
    1st place : Carolina 12-4
Last place : New orleans 8-8

    2007-2008
    1st place : Tampa Bay 9-7
    Last place : Atlanta 4-12

    2006-2007
    1st place : New Orleans 10-6
Last place : Tampa Bay 4-12

    2005-2006
    1st place : Tampa Bay 11-5
Last place : New orleans 3-13

    2004-2005
    1st place : Atlanta 11-5
    Last place :Tampa Bay 5-11

    2003-2004

    Notes :

    Favorites in primetime games are
    71-59-2 ATS ( 54.6 % ) during last 3 regular seasons
    ( 2006-2008 )
This fairly high percentage has been fueled in good part by the Turkey day games going 9-0 ATS in this span .

Overs lead the way during this span ( last 3 seasons ) by going
     66-61-5 ( 52 % )
propelled by the 2008-2009 season where 80 % of the games went over the total on Monday night games !

Thursday games have been kind to the backer of the favored team as an amazing 80 % of the games played that day have been won and covered by the favorites ...
    2006-2007 ....2007-2008...2008-2009 seasons combined :
Favorites are on a 20-5-1 ATS run !

For those that argue ( generally speaking ) that betting on the favorites and the overs , particularly when it is the only game showing is a sucker's bet ,  have some monster numbers stating it ain't so !

Some interesting preseason trends & trivia >>

    Deja Vu ?
Miami Dolphins finished their 2007-2008 season 1-15 ( with only win in overtime )  and began their preseason in 2008-2009 @ home favored by - 1.5 over Tampa Bay .
Miami went on to lose that game to Tampa 6-17 ( and then won their remaining 3 games )

If that scenario looks familiar , it should .

Only one win separates the Detroit Lions of 2008 and the Miami Dolphins of 2007.
Detroit is playing its first game @ home just as Miami was and the spread is virtually the same .

Tony Sparano became head coach of the Miami Dolphins on
1/16/2008 so the game against TB was his first game .

Jim Schwartz became head coach of the Detroit Lions on 1/16/2009 .
    *********************
The following shows preseason record for coaches in their preseason debut , including their very first game :
    ( new hires last 2 seasons )

    Ken Whisehunt 0-4  1st game L 10-24 ( -2.5 ) vs NO
    Mike Smith 2-2  1st game L 17-20 ( + 3.5 ) @ Jac
    John Harbaugh 1-3  1st game W 16-15 ( + 3.5 ) @ NE

    Cam Cameron 2-2   1st game W 18-17 ( + 1.5 ) vs Jac

Speaking of NFL coache's records during the preseason >>>

One of the best records in the preseason belong to
    Jack Del Rio .
His record last 6 years , all with the Jaguars stands at 17-7 SU having never had a losing preseason.
Last 2 years his team went 3-1 consecutively losing in each ocassion to the Miami Dolphins 14-19 @ home in 2008 and 17-18 @ Miami in 2007

Jack del Rio and the Jaguars will be facing the Miami Dolphins on the first game of the preseason in the 2009 season ...

    *************************
Another interesting stat belongs to Jon Gruden of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
His overall coaching record during the preseason stands at a stellar 30-16 SU ( 65.2 % ) making him one of the best preseason coaches in the NFL

    His record last 6 years stands at 16-9 SU ( 64 % )

Despite this excellent record his achiles heel seems to be Jack Del Rio 17-7 SU ( 70.8 % )
Jon Gruden has been unable to beat Jacksonville last 5 preseasons while losing ATS in his last 6 attempts.
In this battle of excellent preseason coaches , we can state the following :
Jack Del Rio is 6-0 ATS vs Jon Gruden last 6 preseason games
Jacksonville is 6-0 ATS vs Tampa Bay last 6 preseason games

Jack Del Rio and his Jaguars will be hosting Jon Gruden and his Buccaneers on 8/22/09

    OOPS !

    Mayor scew up !......

Jon Gruden is no longer the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers !

As of 1/17/2009 it is Raheem Morris , the defensive backs coach last 2 seasons for Tampa Bay ...

I began comparing teams in the preseason and Gruden's record ...and kept the association alive ...but it no longer exists ..!

Yes, Jack Del Rio ( Jacksonville ) does have a 6-0 ATS record vs Tampa Bay last 6 preseasons , but we have a new sheriff in town !
...and it isn't Jon Gruden in Tampa any longer !

    My bad !

Thank You d5298x for correcting me !

    OOPS !

    Mayor scew up !......

Jon Gruden is no longer the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers !

As of 1/17/2009 it is Raheem Morris , the defensive backs coach last 2 seasons for Tampa Bay ...

Great trends NFL week 1 only for Over/Unders.

Week 1 O/U lines of 44 or higher
    Since 2003 7-22 O/U (76%) under, that is 3 out of every 4 games

In the last 4 seasons the results are 3-13 O/U (81% under)

In the last 3 seasons the results are 1-7 O/U (88% under)

Only 1 game last season, Dallas vs Cleveland, line 48.5, result 28-10, under by more than 10 points.

Remember only good stat for week 1 regular season
