It's all a show of power. Roger has been doing it for years. They know other teams have the same programs and will offer amnesty for the teams if they stop now. 


According to suspensions over the last couple years. 

Lying to Roger (pay 4 pain)= vehicular homicide.

It's not the bounties that was the real issue. Bounty systems are common practice like you mentioned. It's what they were for that's the issue. A bounty for a cart off??? When the cart comes out, that means the injury is pretty serious. Bountys for seriously injuring players is a bunch of bullshit, and violates a serious unwritten rule of the game. I don't care how much you hate an opponent, you should NEVER attempt to injure someone and possibly take away their means to make a living. Jeapordizing someone's career and livelyhood for a 2 grand bounty which is essentially pocket change to NFL players, is just unacceptable. 

I'm sure if it was just a big hit, big play, or sack bounty, they woulda just gotten a slap on the wrist if that. But when your bounty system involves intentionally injuring opponents, sometimes seriously, you need to be dealt with.

We have all known that for years.  Saints knew it.  Yet they kept it up for 3 years after being warned.  Stupid is as stupid does. 

If you're going to be that dumb, you deserve what you get.

Whatever makes you feel better.  I think the Saints are what the NFL ought to be from an offensive standpoint.  Great story.  But if you want to gloss over the fact that they ignored the Commish for damn near 3 years and then piss and moan about the punishment, that's your choice.  Whatever makes you feel better.  Why do they get a free pass?

This has nothing to do with my comment. What they didn't wasn't right, but the penalties from Roger over the years just lack consistency. Guy has a hard on for overcompensating for something. Not glossing over anything except the fact that certain coaches get passes when it comes to infractions in the league. RG wanted to make an example and it just so happened to be the Saints. You and I both know this happens A LOT

Saints deserved this for the utter stupidity involved here. The league postures itself as "player safety" is the #1 issue and you have coaches and gms that are involved with a bounty program. Not to mention the league is being sued by former players that claim the league didn't care about "player safety" for years.

In addition, how do you run a draft missing your GM & coach? Payton loses $6M in salary. This possibly may be the stupidest way I've ever seen for someone to lose $6M. 

The players are all in a union, how the fuck can you pay someone to intentionally hurt someone in your union?

The absolute ridiculous part is we're talking about a chump change bounty system here for people that make $millions of dollars a year. If you make $3M a year, your game check is $187,500. Are you telling me that you'd get excited over $1,000, $1,500 or even $5000? wtf?

Since the NFL is wanting to be so High and Mighty.... why are they not donating all of the profits to charity or back to the fans that were made from selling Saints Gear, Tickets, etc during these bounty years?  Come on Rodger... Step up... this happened in your League... shouldnt you take any of the blame? You should have caught it sooner...

 

Also, what about the other teams that Williams coached for that had the bounty systems... why are they not being punished? Dungy said that it was probably Williams that started Mannings Neck problems when Williams was coaching for the Redskins... Why arnt those teams losing their head coaches for a season and losing draft picks and being fined?  Come on... lets be fair Rodger.

I agree 100%.... Williams should have just given a plaque for good hits and a trophy for knockouts and we wouldnt have this issue.... because none of these guys cared about the $1000 for a good hit or $1500 for a knockout... if they actually were trying harder, it was for the prize, not the money... honestly, anything probably could have been given and they would have played the same.

I like the Saints but I'm starting to agree with some of the opinions here.  I don't care about the bounty system.  But they were stupid not to get rid of it when they were told and had a chance.  As far as the commish, he is like the ones in other sports.  They are control freaks with huge egos and punish more out of bruised ego and not for the good of the game.
