Stats are so misleading....here is why

Denver has the #1 rush D, correct but maybe here is why...here are the teams they played this year and their rushing rank in the NFL

    Balt #26
    KC #6
    Det #32
    Minn #4
    Oak #28
    Clev #22
    GB #12
    Indy #29
    KC #6
    Chic#11
    NE #30
    SD #31
    Oak #28
    Pitt #16
    Cinncy #13
    SD #31

They faced only 2 teams who ranked in the top 10 in rushing
They faced only 4 teams in the top 16
They also faced the worst ranked 4 team, 2 of them twic...so 6 of their 16 games were against the qworst rushing teams in the league

sobering info for Donkey Donors no doubt... but they will come back with "ATLANTA". Forgetting that Atlanta actually started the season 5-0 before disaster, Ryan to Julio might be the best QB/WR tandem in football, and historically the Falcons have enjoyed one of the best home field advantages in the NFC (the best) since Ryan was under center. And it was a revenge game for humiliating Atlanta in Carolina earlier in the year. The loss was a wake up call, and they proceeded to run the table and land in the SB as worthy favorites (some will disagree with this of course).

like him or not, Cam is the leader, they have all bought in to the tune of 24-2 if you go back to last year. This team is rolling and they should rock Denver.

I do love how people bring up Atlanta...which was a division game which is always tough...and how Atlanta won because of a bomb to Julio in triple coverage.....

But, they dont mention Denver losing at home to Oakland like 13-10 or whatever it was

I have watched every Denver game this year and every Panther game this year. I will tell you right now, Carolina will not be able to run the ball against this D.

    No doubt in my mind.

The Panther run game is slow with Stewart, he is a plodder. Denver will give him his three yard runs all day but Miller and Ware will not over pursue on the back end and they will stop Cam.

Cam may beat them through the air but there is no way Wade lets them run the read option offense effectively, no way.

I am almost certain they spy Cam too with Trevathan or Marshall. If I was Wade, I would make Cam a pocket passer to Ginn and the other bums against Harris and Talib, that will be the matchup that the Panthers will have to win to win the game.

    You rush 4.
    You spy 1.
    You Double Cover Olsen
You play zone or single coverage from there and pray that Ginn drops the ball like he does 40% of the time as he will probably beat you deep once or twice.

Youre right...I mean they did stop Oakland, SD and all those other great running teams...

No doubt they stop a team who rushed for 100+ in 33 straight games...which only has been done 3 times in history since the merger

    Look-
Defensively you can do whatever you want. Denver will simply not allow Carolina to run the ball. The strength of this Denver defense is the secondary. The weakness of Carolina are the wide receivers. Wade will make the action happen on the outside. It is only common sense. You can do whatever you want with statistics but before you do remember this.

Oakland and San Diego are two of your worse ranked run offenses and two of their games each came against this defense. That figures into the number.

Overall, the average of those teams is 20, again, when you factor in they each had to play the number one run defense during the year (divisonal games played them twice) this is an average statistical sample.

The Panthers may very well run for a 100 yards, that does not even concern me, what does concern me is Cam rushing for a lot (confidence) and Olsen. I will take my chances with Stewart/Ginn and the rest of this team.

I am pretty certain Wade will see it the same way.

Talib on Ginn/ Harris on Cotchery
Double Olsen and Spy Cam, that is the way it will go if I was coach.

    LET GO PACK

Typical of people looking for holes in the Denver DE (last week Boston this week Carolina cappers..
    My stat seem to differ:
Denver faced GB 8th, Minn 5, KC 6, KC 6, all these had their #1 QB working in the game. 25% of schedule ALL with #1 QB playoff team

Now Carolina Rushing D...who did they face? as my stats have Carolina 4th...(vs DNVR #2 against the rush.)
    TB #4, TB # 4, rookie QB  below 500 W/L
    Dallas #9 - backup QB,  below 500
Seatle #3  did Lynch play  ? playoff team
    GB #8
WASH #20  playoff  and hou #16 backup QB playoff team

Then there is the balance of this miserable schedule: JAX15,
    Atl 19,19,  NO 24th,24th, NYG 18, Tenn 25, Indy 29, and last Phily #32......

Most rational people would agree that Carolina's 4th best rushing  crown was versus  inferior opponents..YET they were 4th not 2nd....If the schedule was in reverse there could be a discussion..like Carolina is 4th but then they scored more points than Denver so teams had to throw more often to catch up to Carolina....OR  why try to run when Carolina was only 16th in passing yardage allowed....Whereas Denver it was pick your poison Denver was 3rd......Damn if we do and damn if we don't....they stopped the rush and the pass equally and effectively..  where as the NFC champs Carolina gave up 239 yards about as many as they themselves gained offensively gained, and faced only Wash Hou and Seattle with positive  W/L records...

so lets throw out the stats......because the more we dig into the Carolina numbers the less impressed we become.

yeah, you won't win any arguments about strength of schedule here.. we all know about the NFC south this year..

and since you mentioned "the merger," it just flashed on the NFL channel, "Denver is the 4th team since the merger to go to the SB with the #1 D in rush yards per attempt and #1 D in pass yards per attempt.. I'm not saying these guys are the proverbial "'85 bears," but it seems like the average fan/average bettor perceives the game as 95% offense, 4% defesnse, and 1% special teams.  I get it.  All we've seen the last two weeks is Carolina's offense crushing the 1H of these games and "superman's" huge smile and all his friggin yogurt commercials, and games are only good and exciting if there' s lots of scoring..

there was a guy on here earlier this season who actually said in my thread, "how can you watch the game and bet the under??"  I didn't even respond..

but shutting down big game masters Brady and Belichick is more impressive to me than seeing an upstart offense beat up on Sea and AZ..

that's just me.. I think defense will ALWAYS be under appreciated by the average joe.. And yes, Carolina's defense is really good too..

but they're not catching 6 points..

hmm,  Carolina's OL was 21st in sack rate this year.  So there were 20 other teams that protected their passer better than Carolina??

after these last two games, I'd assume Cam was unsackable..

Nah, ATL won because they suffocated that unstoppable Panther's offense and held them to 13 points.  But tomatoe, tomato.

Denver played against 4 of the top 10 RB's this season..make  it 5 if JC wasnt injured and managed to keep them under 100 yards. Only Jamaal Charles gashed the Broncos run D this season for over 100 yds.

I'd say Broncos run D is pretty legit. I know Carolina aint going to be running all over Denver like they did against the Cardinals.
Sip on that plus money honey!

SD ran for 93 and 110 yards VS Denver, VS all other teams SD ave 82.5 yards per game.

Raiders ran for 65 and 27 yards VS Denver and ave about 91 yards in all 16 games so Denver was 50 % at holding those 2 teams below what they ave VS all other teams, not overly impressive.

But 4 games is a small sample size and passing efficiency will likely play a bigger role in who wins on sunday and the no.1 defense there, yep it's Carolina .

Panthers defensive passer rating  in playoffs ave of 67.65 per game
    Broncos 75.35

Panthers better in both regular season and playoffs.

Panthers defense players , Seattle no.1 in offensive QBPR and Zona no.6, ave of 3.5

Denver played Pats 4th and Steelers 14th, ave of 9.

The info seems to suggest we can throw strength of schedule out the window since Carolina played the better offenses and played them better then Denver played lesser offenses.

Carolina seems to have proven strength of schedule is not an issue with the more impressive play VS better teams in the playoffs.

It's fun digging up stats to make you feel better about your bet... I can do that, too!

    Carolina's #2 ranked Rushing offense...
    • Played 2 games against teams ranked in the top 10 in Rushing Defense
    • Played 7 games against teams ranked in the bottom 10 in Rushing Defense
    • Played 3 games against teams ranked in the bottom 2 in Rushing Defense

Well, I guess Carolina only runs the ball against bad teams...thats why they have done it 33 straight games for 100yds, which has only been done 3 times in the NFL

Another stat about Denvers "great" D...they faced 3 teams in the top 12 on offense, Carolina faced 9

And the counter-argument would be how many of those top offenses that Carolina has faced also had a bad defense

Another stat about Denvers "great" D...they faced 3 teams in the top 12 on offense, Carolina faced 9

And the counter-argument would be how many of those top offenses that Carolina has faced also had a bad defense

Pack is so confident he is blind. Reminds me of his Seattle wildcard game.

However I agree that Denvers D will struggle against the run and could be a factor at the end of the game.

This is the superbowl and you expect the two teams to be good...

Sooner or later Panthers are going to have to pass and the tackles are suspect along with three awesome corners the likes cam has not seen yet.

Panthers are going to sack Manning right up the middle.   Going to be a low scoring defensive battle and 6 points might be just a little to much.
