You can’t blame the guy, really. I mean if I had an endorsement deal with Taco Bell, I’d be thinking outside the bun at least once a day.
But all those beans and cheese are tampering Chuck’s recollection; either that or the guy just has a selective memory.
Barkley and Michael Jordan chatted with Arizona Republic columnist Dan Bickley at a celebrity golf event this past weekend about how they would never have made the same decision that LeBron James made.
MJ is the guy who’s grabbing all the SportsCenter headlines but his comments were pretty tame and, really, Mike can say whatever he wants because he’s got six rings.
But Chuck, well... he bit off a little more than he can chew.
“It’s disappointing from a competition standpoint,” Barkley told Bickley. “You want to beat these guys. Sports are all about competition, and you want to beat the best. You want to beat Kobe. You want to beat Dwyane Wade. You want to beat the Celtics, who beat you last year. That’s what competition is about.”
Wait a second… didn’t Barkley join a Big 3 of his own? That’s right, Chuck pouted his way out of Phoenix in 1996, forcing the Suns to trade the then 33-year-old forward to the Houston Rockets. He played with Clyde Drexler and Hakeem Olajuwon and later, after Drexler retired, Houston brought in Scottie Pippen.
So that’s two Big 3’s Chuck played for. And to get back to that competition argument - people close to the Rockets know that things never worked out for Houston during the Barkley era because Sir Charles was fat, out of shape and chucked bad-looking 3-pointers at will.
It took Pippen, a six-time NBA champion, half a season to figure out the Rockets were never going to go far with Barkley’s fat ass holding the team up.
"He's a very selfish guy," Pippen said of then teammate Barkley in an interview with ESPN back in 1999. "He doesn't show the desire to want to win. That's my reason for wanting to get away from playing with him anymore because he just doesn't show the dedication.
"I probably should've listened to Michael (Jordan) a year ago when he said that Charles will never win a championship because he doesn't show any dedication."
So, Pip got the hell out of dodge and Barkley retired soon afterward without a ring.
A lot of people can criticize LeBron James’ decision but Barkley isn’t one of them.
