I'm with The Hawk. I don't know how half the guys that have been mentioned fall into the category under-rated when they've been in movies or themselves been nominated for major awards. Of those mentioned that I agree qualify are:
Christian Bale - Machinist was good. Batman Begins should be the archetype for comic book adaptions.
Emile Hirsch - extremely versatile for a young guy. Alpha Dog sucked but not because of him.
Paul Giamatti - almost doesn't qualify because he's gotten a lot of praise last couple of years just not the awards.(Howard Stern's boss, not dad)
Don Cheadle - similar to Giamatti but hasn't gotten enough credit beyond Hotel Rwanda.

Nice to see someone mention Gary Oldman. To me he is the greatest actor of all time and the name that immediately popped into my head whenreading this thread title. He is a lot more than Commissioner Gordon. But I love that he took that role just to hear his great mini-speech about "escalation". He just disappears into roles. Check him out playing the pimp in True Romance, the psycho DEA Agent Stansfield in The Professional and Dracula in Dracula.
