haven't seen the remake and probably will wait for it to be on a movie channels sometime in the future because "HOW do you BEAT perfection"?. shame on you IF you haven't seen the original. it is ALWAYS rated as one of the BEST gambling themed movies by the Covers crowd when those style movies are discussed.

The original with Caan is on netflix and I saw that too which was much better

Nothing like that could ever happen to anyone, the movie was about a guy with a suicidal problem, not a gambling problem.

Pretty much a completely different movie from the original. Except for the basketball player in his class.
I'll go out on a limb and say they didn't have any gambling or basketball consultants assisting with the dramatization of the basketball scenes - completely unrealistic... That was very disappointing.
The movie is watchable but after it's over you don't have any "man that was a good movie" vibe. It's just watchable.
I'm a huge James Caan fan, the original was way better and if you like Caan, check out Thief. It's a Michael Mann directed film, it's kind of a prelude to Heat, which he also directed. I've bought Thief on VHS, DVD and a new Blue-ray special edition I just picked up a month ago. Soundtrack to that is by Tangerine Dream which is awesome as well.

So I just saw this movie. I'd give it 4 out of 10.
I understand the underlying premise and for those who suffer from a gambling addiction, I can see that many could relate. In that regard, this film touches on the darkness of addiction.
The problems with this film are the following
1. No character development.
2. Lame love/interest story.
3. Shallow Depth
The character development is lacking here. Why do I care about this protagonist? Why should I care? Why does the basketball player do what he does, only after 5 minutes of screen time?
They needed to develop this better, sort of like Rounders where you really have a character development.
The girl love interest was just poor.
Overall, I'm more inclined to watch the original film that Rink Rat mentioned. I wouldn't see this again, but it was just an average film.
