Haven't seen any Oscars nominated movies yet except Nebraska. I think that was nominated.  I want to see Gravity.

    Nebraska
any good? Mrs been pestering me to get it off PPV and wondering IF it's worth it

watched High Roller: The Stu Ungar Story (2003) last night. had seen it before years ago and still a good story. early work by Sopronos actor Michael Imperioli in the title roll. Jonathan Press was excellent as Unger as a child as was Michael Nouri as the gangster Vincent and Steve Schirripa as Vincents right hand man Anthony. excellent biography of one of the men that mad Poker into an international sport. too bad he died so young BUT it was understandable with his booze, drugs and gambling lifestyle. the guy was "all in" all the time. esp for Covers degenerates

When I first started watching Nebraska I didn't think I was going to like it.  But as the movie goes on it grows on you.  Good to see Stacey Keach.  LIke his acting back in the day.  June Squibb is great in the movie.  I thought she should have won an award.

I watched "Grumpy Old Men" on Starz Monday night.   Haven't seen that in probably 15 years..... 2 things struck me, 1: How funny it was (Burgess Merideth stole every scene he was in, plus the fantastic outtakes during the credits)

and 2:  Even though this was made in still fairly recently (1993), I can honestly say they don't make stuff like this anymore.  No CGI, no special effects, no huge budget...just a plain simple good story with relatable characters that you actually care about in just over 90 minutes.

Yeah , this definitely got mediocre reviews from critics and avg viewers (Rotten Tomatoes) . I thought it was definitely worth a watch . ALSO check out Elizabeth Olsen (sister of the Olsen twins) in her nude scenes about an hour n 7min into the movie.

the two movies about Truman Capote writing "I Cold Blood" are on movie channels next week.

the 2005 Capote stars the late Philip Seymour Hoffman in the title roll for which he won the Best Actor Oscar with Catherine Keener as Nelle Harper Lee, Chris Cooper as detective Alvin Dewey and Clifton Collins, Jr. as Perry Smith. plays on EPIX3 Thursday March 13th @ 4 pm pacific and repeats Friday March 14th@ 3:20 am & 11:40 am

the 2006 Infamous stars Toby Jones as Capote with Sandra Bullock as Nelle Harper Lee, Jeff Daniels as detective Alvin Dewey  and Daniel Craig as Perry Smith. it plays on the Cinemax 5 Star Max channel Monday March 3rd @ 10:30 pm pacific time

BOTH are VERY well acted movies and definately worth watching. I personally think that Infamous is the better of the two because I thought that Toby Jones just caught Capote's mannerisms better than Hoffman did. also Bullock, Daniels and esp the "pre James Bond" Craig were better than those that played the parts in the Hoffman movie. I agree with NY film Critic Rex Reed who wrote " "They gave the Oscar to the wrong Truman Capote"

watch both and you can decide for yourself

recorded last week On TCM and watched last night The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (1965). excellent adaptation of the John le Carre Cold War spy novel of the same name with Richard Burton, Claire Bloom, and Oskar Werner. Burton nominated for a 1966 Best Actor Oscar. well worth watching IF you are into "real life" spy drama. this is NOT your "James Bond" style story and actually expects you to use your brain. has a LOT of "twists and turns" in the plot

Dark Shadows (2012) not really into modern vampire movies BUT got to watching this one last night because it had Johnny Depp and Michelle Pfeiffer SO thought would give it a shot and it was really entertaining. also stars Helena Bonham Carter, Eva Green and Chloe Grace (Kick Azz) Moretz. Alice Cooper performs at the Collins Ball late in the movie. movie is fast paced and VERY funny in spots. it plays again on HBO channels Wednesday March 12th @ 5:00 am and Saturday March 15th @ 4:00 am, 7:00 am, 2:00 pm and 5:00 pm pacific time

Eva Green = one HELL of a body. BIG set of natural boobs didn't think the movie was gonna get any Academy Award nominations BUT was pretty fast paced and generally entertaining.

    Depp
continues to amaze me. the guy can play ANYTHING from serious drama to adventure to comedy. do NOT think I have ever seen a "bad" movie he was in.

watched Disney's Cars franchise spinoff Planes (2013) last night. entertaining movie with Disney's usual excellent animation BUT didn't think either the characters or plot were nearly as good as either Cars or (esp) Cars 2. "Chug" the gas truck is NO "Tow-mater" and "Skipper" the Corsair is NO "Doc Hudson". the Characters of "Bulldog" a DH Comet and "El Chupacabra" a Gee Bee were probably the most interesting in the movie. the Navy Carrier scenes were kind of neat as was the movie alluding to the "Jolly Rogers" navy fighter squadron VF- 84 (now VF-103) and uses a a stylized version of their skull and cross bones logo for Skipper's former squadron

plays on Starz channels again Tuesday March 11th, Thursday March 13th ,k Friday March 14th and Sunday March 16th. entertaining movie worth watching IF you liked the Cars series. it is just NOT as interesting a story or compelling of characters in my opinion. I rate it

NEBRASKA was fantastic!  but i thought nick nolte looked like garbage in it until i realized about half way through that it was bruce dern

MacGruber was fantastic in this movie, even without the celery trick

Better call saul was in it too and he is a very talented thesbian

the director did the about schmidt movie and the wine one sideways

im kinda getting tired of him bashing middle americans who have been bashed by life, but the cast really carried this film

stacey keach is in it and ive always loved him since he was Mike Hammer

watched National Treasure (2004) just because I came across it. after first 15 minutes though it was going to STINK and I'm really NOT a Nicolas Cage fan BUT was pretty interesting with it's "stealing the Declaration of Independence" capper plot had excellent action in spots and good CGI. Diane Kruger is definately not hard to look at and Sean Bean and his gangster crew are really hateful villians.

I would compare it somewhat to the recently reviewed Now You See Me in it's 'capper" plot with a lot of "twists" that keep you thinking. plays on Starz channels again Thursday March 13th and Monday March 17th.

watched The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013) on PPV last night. about the same basic plot as the first Hunger Games and like other second of "series" type movies like the Star Wars, it is really just a "set up" for the final two yet to come, "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Parts 1 & 2". felt like the characters of the "tributes" for the games in this one were NOT as interesting as in the first movie. also thought the ending was a bit "chopped off" kind of like an old "Flash Gordon" 1930's movie house serial. all that was missing was cuts from the music to "Les Preludes"

with the death of actor Philip Seymour Hoffman, have to wonder WHO will take up that roll OR how will they write his character out? it is still a decent SciFi action movie and worth watching esp IF you are into the story BUT do NOT expect it to be as compelling as the first one as it is an obvious "filler" between the first and third. I rate it  but NOT really worth a PPV

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hunger_Games:_Mockingjay_%E2%80%93_Part_2  >>> states that Philip Seymour Hoffman, who plays Plutarch Heavensbee, died February 2, 2014. At the time of his death, he had completed filming his scenes for Part 1, and had a week left of shooting for Part 2. Lionsgate released a statement stating that due to the majority of Hoffman’s scenes being completed, the release date for Part 2 will not be affected. It was later announced that Hoffman will be digitally recreated for a major scene that included his character, one that Hoffman had left to shoot at the time of his death. (ain't CGI something?)

Funeral Home (1980) Kay Hawtrey, Barry Morse.  A young woman arrives at her Grandmother's house, which used to be a funeral home, to help her turn it into a bed and breakfast inn.  Seems like a nice thing to do.  Except that all the guests end up missing or dead.  There was a run of slasher films from the late 70's thru the early to mid 80s.  I guess Halloween started all this stuff although some could argue it were movies before this.  This movie ranks to me a little below the middle of the slasher genre.  I looked up Kay Hawtrey the other day to see if she is still alive and she is at the age of 87.

I found the Hunger Games 1 very boring.  Not going to even consider the second.

Nebraska was a very good movie about everyday real life. We don't see movies like this anymore.

Dark Shadows was a fun movie.  LeRink Depp's a great actor but the guy is one of the weirdest guys in Hollywood.  He hasn't made a movie in over 15 years where he didn't have 3 layers of womens makeup on.  He loves to make his face as white as possible.

Saw National Treasure a couple years ago and had zero expectations but was pleasantly surprised.

Oldboy directed by Spike Lee was decent.  Want to watch the original though, read it's much better.
