From Swartz's help in the development of the basic internet protocol RSS to his co-founding of Reddit, his fingerprints are all over the internet. But it was Swartz's groundbreaking work in social justice and political organizing combined with his aggressive approach to information access that ensnared him in a two year legal nightmare. It was a battle that ended with the taking of his own life at the age of 26. Aaron's story touched a nerve with people far beyond the online communities in which he was a celebrity. This film is a personal story about what we lose when we are tone deaf about technology and its relationship to our civil liberties.

I saw Bad Words last night.... very funny with Jason Bateman as a 40 year old who finds a loophole in the rules and enters the national spelling bee.  His interaction with the kids is hilarious and young Indian actor Rohan Chand was very good as his sidekick/competition.   Not for kids

'Out of the furnace'

Easily worth a watch..But could have been better. Woody Harrelson still gots it, he was good in this one.

(I'm kinda surprised so many good actors signed on for a pretty generic brother's revenge story.)

after watching The Butler (2013) decided to rewatch The Great Debaters (2007) which is a history based movie about the black Wiley College debate team who were champions back in the 1930's in the age of "Jim Crow" BUT were still able to defeat many top white college debate teams. interesting story staring Denzel Washington (who also directed), Forest Whitaker, Denzel Whitaker (no relation to Forest), Nate Parker and Jurnee Smollett. excellent acting by all involved esp young Denzel Whitaker. IF you liked The Butler I think you will also enjoy this movie. I rate it

Riddick (2013) sci-fi action movie with Vin Diesel as the title character. I seem to be running into a load of garbage sci-fi lately with tripe like Ender's Game, Godzilla 2000, The Colony, Pacific Rim and After Earth. this one is even MORE foolish and poorly done than any of those which I didn't think possable. plays on Cinemax channels next week IF you want to waste your time. definate

Witness For The Prosecution (1958) played on Turner Classic Movies last night. stars Charles Laughton, Elsa Lanchester, Marlene Dietrich and Tyrone Power with the great Irish comic actress Una O'Connor in her last film roll as the murdered woman's maid. great courtroom mystery-drama from the Agatha Christie hit play with a crazy "twist" at the end. pretty much a "tour de force" by Laughton. listed @ #6 in AFI's Top 10 courtroom dramas and a definite "must see" for fans of that genre. worth ordering up on netflix

Dutch I agree with everything you said about Out of the Furnace.  Slow at times but I don't mind slow if done well.  Good movie.

Oh one thing about Enders Game LeRink.  At least watchable.  Most unrealistic movie you could ever watch but at least I made it through the whole thing and thought it was good.  But I could see how you can bash it just for the plot which was way way out there.

LeRink I wish you would go to a 4 star system or thumbs up like all other critics.  4  up would mean great great movie, classic.  Hard to judge on 3  because often you have given 3 thumbs up and yes good but not classic good.  Something to think about. No way the Butler is a classic and deserves 3 thumbs up.

also Fritz Lang's silent science-fiction epic Metropolis (1927) is a definate "must see" for SciFi fans Saturday @ 5:00 pm followed by Boris Karloff's classic horror film The Mummy (1932) @ 9:45 pm. both times pacific

as for I could see how you can bash (Enders Game) just for the plot which was way way out there, WHAT plot? just more tripe that tries to "Wow" you with the CGI but is just plain foolish. seen a LOT of that lately

finally watched American History X (1998) staring Edward Norton and Edward Furlong with Beverly D'Angelo, Stacy Keach, Elliott Gould and Avery Brooks (Captain Sisko on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine). well acted movie about the "skinhead" culture and how young people can be seduced by it. 2nd Academy Award nomination for Norton, this time for Best Actor after his 1996 Best Supporting Actor nomination for the courtroom drama Primal Fear. plays again on HBO2east Thursday July 31st @ 1:00 p-m pacific time. rate it    of four

Cobb (1994) "warts and all" biographic movie about the famed baseball player Ty Cobb. stars Tommy Lee Jones as Ty Cobb and Robert Wuhl as his biographer, sportswriter Al Stump, who's two books about Cobb are the basic plot of the movie. well acted by both Jones and esp Wuhl who I think is an under-rated actor. pretty funny in spots with Cobb's craziness esp late in life. played on HBO and hopefully will be on again soon. rate it   of four

American History X was great and have watched it a few times.

Cinderella Man (2005) bio-drama about Irish-American boxer James J. Braddock and his overcoming going broke in the Great Depression to come back and upset Max Baer for the heavyweight championship in 1935. stars Russell Crowe as James J. Braddock (Golden Globe Best Actor nomination), Renee Zellweger as his wife Mae, Paul Giamatti as his manager Joe Gould (Academy Award & Golden Globe Best Supporting Actor nominations) and Craig Bierko as Max Baer

compelling story that I think most fight fans or those that just like a good "underdog" story will enjoy. it is pretty much a true life "Rocky". does take some liberties in the depiction of Max Baer as a crude thug and all around azzhole. in fact his son Max Baer, Jr (who played Jethro on the 1960's comedy The Beverly Hillbillies) threatened to sue over it. plays again on Cinemax channels Friday August 1st, Sunday August 3rd and Monday August 4th. rate it of four

Cinderella Man is one of those movies that I really liked that no one I know seems to have seen or even heard of.

didn't really do well at the box office making only $61 million for an $88 million cost. somewhat surprising with Russell Crowe as Braddock esp post Gladiator (although Master and Commander, which was his movie just previous to this one, just barely broke even on it's $150 million cost). it has an 80% "fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes

btw, the nickname "Cinderella Man" was tagged on Braddock by the great sports and short story writer Damon Runyon (who is one of my all time favorite authors).

The Crew (2000) VERY funny "dark comedy" crime film staring Richard Dreyfuss, Burt Reynolds, Seymour Cassel and Dan Hedaya as four old retired "wise guys" living in an old Miami South Beach hotel BUT the place is being over-run with yuppy's and the management is trying to force them out. SO they decide to stage a fake murder to scare the yuppies off BUT the corpse they use is the body of drug cartel boss's father and everything gets CRAZY NUTS. also stars Jennifer Tilly (who has really gotten porky since staring in "Let It Ride" with Dreyfuss), Lainie Kazan and Miguel Sandoval as the cartel boss.

only runs 90 minutes BUT is packed with oodles of sight gags, funny lines and "screwball" situations. is one of the funnier movies I have seen recently and well worth recording. I laughed my butt off throughout. it is almost as funny as the mentioned "Let It Ride". Rotten Tomatoes says it STINKS, I think it's GREAT. plays again on Showtime-Extream channel again Wednesday August 6th @ 2;20 am pacific time. rate it of four.
