Movies you saw in April

2 Guns (2013) crime-action movie starring Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg with Paula Patton, Bill Paxton, Edward James Olmos. crazy "twisted" plot and pretty much non-stop action. I enjoyed it and thought it was pretty funny in spots to boot. plays again on HBOZ channel Wednesday April 22nd @ 6:30am, Friday April 24th @ 11:00am & 6:00pm. rate it    of four

Transcendence (2014) kind of wierd SciFi about a dying scientist who's brain functions are transferred to a sentient computer which then proceeds to become a "benevolent dictator" trying to take over the world. I found to be a somewhat interesting plot and also had some excellent action. stars Johnny Depp as the scientist, Rebecca Hall as his wife who performs the "thought transfer" just before he dies and Morgan Freeman as an FBI agent friend of the family BUT who has doubts about the morality of the transfer. worth watching for SciFi fans. plays again on 5-MAX Tuesday April 21st @ 6:00pm and Saturday April 25th @ 2:15pm then on Cinemax East & West Sunday Aprl 26th @ 1:10pm & 4:10pm. rate it  of four

Planes: Fire & Rescue (2014) sequel to the 2013 film Planes which is a spinoff of Pixar's Cars franchise. NOT nearly as good as the first one. I enjoyed the earlier cars and Planes movies BUT this one looked like John Lasseter and Pixar / Disney Toon Studios just threw something together with not much thought to plot or character development. worth watching IF you are into the franchise BUT think most people will be as disappointed as was. plays again on various Starz channels Sunday April 19th, Tuesday April 21st, Thursady April 23rd and Sunday April 26th. was pretty much for me

Thanks for the input/work Rink. You're good at reviews - I shop here for what and where to watch thanks to you. We all appreciate it.

thanks for the comment, searchwarrant. IF you are into action movies, check out The Expendables 3 (2014) and 2 Guns (2013).  BOTH excellent

disconnect .....really interesting movie about how the internet can be a dangerous place it tells 3 different stories that are semi connected and it is really powerful stuff. i think its on starz or cinnemax on demand

The Double (2011) spy thriller staring Richard Gere, Topher Grace and Martin Sheen. Odette Yustman, who plays the Grace characters wife, NOT bad to look at. pretty good suspense and action throughout and with some interesting "plot twists" both at the start and at the end. plays on Showtime east & west Monday April 27th, Showtime-Showcase Tuesday  April 28th and The Movie Channel East (HD) Friday May 1st. rate it    of four for spy drama fans

No No: A Dockumentary (2014) details the life story of baseball pitcher Dock Ellis, his career, his addictions to alcohol and amphetamines and his subsequent efforts to help other addicts after he got straight until his death in 2008. really good history of Doc's life and times detailing how the Pittsburgh Pirates were the first team to use a majority of minorities in games. interesting story NOT just for baseball fans. plays again on Showtime-Extream Sunday April 26th, Showtime Two Wednesday April 29th and again on Showtime-Extream Friday April 30th. rate it    of four for sports history and esp baseball fans.

watched The Professional, aka Leon in most countries other than the US, (1994) last night on Indieplex. even though I have it recorded I just can't pass it up when it plays. one of the BEST acted crime drama-action movies EVER in my opinion. Jean Reno as Leon, Natalie Portman as Mathilda in her film debut and esp Gary Oldman as Stansfield should have ALL been nominated for Oscars as should the movie itself. Stansfield one of the BEST "psycho villains" EVER. just the scene with him and Mathilda in the restroom was worthy of an Oscar nomination and IF then 10 year old Tatum O'Neal could win a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for lameazz  Paper Moon in 1973 then Portman as Mathilda definitely deserved to be nominated. the movie has definitely reached "cult" status world wide. it plays on the Indieplex channel off an on all next week. obviously I rate it     of four

Finally saw The Town which was on my list for awhile, also a great great movie

GREAT crime-action movie. Ben Affleck and Jeremy Renner outstanding. the late Pete Postlethwaite as the gangster boss "Fergie" Colm in his last major screen roll also excellent. definite "must see" movie for crime-action fans

Mississippi Burning (1988) crime thriller loosely based on the FBI investigation into the murders of three civil rights workers in Jessup County Mississippi in 1964. stars Gene Hackman and Willem Dafoe and features Frances McDormand, Brad Dourif, R. Lee Ermey, and Gailard Sartain in supporting rolls. powerful story about the "bad old days" in the deep south well acted by all involved. plays again on Encore-Black channel again Monday April 27th @ 7:35am & 8:40pm. rate it    of four

Infamous (2006) have reviewed this before and it is STILL a VERY well acted drama about Truman Capote researching and writing his bestseller In Cold Blood. stars Toby Jones as Capote, Sandra Bullock as his research assistant Nell Harper Lee, Jeff Daniels as Kansas dectective Alvin Dewey, Daniel Craig and Lee Pace as the murderers Perry Smith and Richard Hickock. also features Sigourney Weaver, Peter Bogdanovich, Gwyneth Paltrow, Isabella Rossellini and Michael Panes as members of Capote's circle of "arty-smarty" New York friends

this move was was released a year after Philip Seymour Hoffman as Truman Capote's Capote for which he won the Best Actor Oscar. I agree with New York Observer critic Rex Reed that ""They gave the Oscar to the wrong Truman Capote". I remember seeing Capote on talk shows years ago and I just think Toby Jones caught his speech and all his mannerisms perfectly. also the other actors portraying the principle characters were all much better than in the Hoffman movie esp Craig as perry Smith. this one also went deeper into Capote New York life which I found more interesting vs the :gloss over" in the Hoffman movie. plays on Stars-Edge again Thursday April 30th @ 3:45am. I rate it     of four the acting is THAT good. it is a movie I can watch numerous time and not get tired of.

Thank You for Smoking (2005) pretty funny comedy-drama about a fictional tobacco lobbyist "spin doctor" Nick Naylor played by Aaron Eckhart with J.K. Simmons, William H. Macy, Katie Holmes, Sam Elliott and Robert Duvallin supporting rolls. young Cameron Bright does a good job as Naylor's pre-teen son Joey. short 90 minute movie with a lot of "dark comedy" about how lobbyist's for the tobacco, alcohol and firearms industries work their trade. plays again on HBO-Comedy Tuesday April 28th @ 5:00pm, Friday May 1st @ 10:55am, Tuesday May 5th @ 12:25am and also HBO-Zone @ 4:20am. rate it   of four

First Monday in October (1981) think this is notable because it is the WORST movie with the great Walter Matthau  that I have EVER seen. complete tripe and a total waste of time. watching it I kept waiting for it to get better and it NEVER DID. complete FAIL

btw, Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) premiers on EPIX channels this Friday May 1st. been looking forward to seeing this as I usually enjoy "Star Wars" style scifi-action. any opinions would be welcome. Rotten Tomatoes reported a 91% "fresh" rating BUT I disagree with their reviews quite often
