The Master

Pretty good flick.  I had high expectations as director Anderson's Boogie Nights is possibly my favorite all time movie, and There Will Be Blood and Hard Eight are also a couple of my favorites.  Joaquin Phoenix is a spazz as usual, but you are rooting him by the end.  Philip Seymour Hoffman good as always. 

Not sure why Amy Adams is up for an Oscar for supporting actress.  If she was on camera for 1.5 minutes I would be shocked.  Not sure what's up with the Oscar people.  Hundreds and thousands of movies to choose from and there wasn't a better performance from a chick who had more than a couple minutes of screen time? 

Anyway, Master rambled on at times, but just as my mind was wandering, something cool brought me back.  Good acting, quirky story.  Not bad. 

Zero Dark Thirty

Pretty good movie.  Actually a lot better than I was expecting. I enjoyed seeing animals tortured in the early going.  I would love to volunteer for that job.

Movie rolled along good for 120 minutes, and then came the actual Bin Laden "mission."  Uhh, so borrrrring.  I fast forwarded through most of it.  So drawn out....screen dark...can't see.  Then 10 minutes of boring aftermath where nothing happened.  Ruined the movie for me.   Jessica Chastain is tough to look at too.  What a mug.  Overall a solid 7.5, but points demoted for the chick and boring behind finale.  Watching the Master again.....hitting me now how much I enjoyed it. 

So pretty much saw the bulk of the "real" Oscars movies.  If my vote was the final say for who gets the Oscars, my votes would be.......

Best Picture:  Argo
Best Actor:  Joaquin Phoenix
Best Actress:  Jennifer Lawrence
Supporting Actor:  Christoph Waltz
Supporting Actress:  Really can't say...Adams and Field each were on screen for 2 minutes tops.  Anne Hathaway was in a musical I couldn't get past the 22 minute mark.  I have no idea who Jacki Weaver was in Silver Linings.  Never heard of The Sessions for Helen Hunt. 
Best Director:  Ben Aff.....oh wait, he wasn't nominated.  David Russell for Silver Linings Playbook.

Any other categories either I don't care about, or Batman got the shaft and never was nominated.

 

will be interesting to see IF Lincoln gets shut out in the Oscars after all the pre awards "buzz". looks lik D-D Lewis will win Best Actor BUT everything else, including Best Picture, has been a LOSER in other award shows

My buddy is an actor out in LA. He said all the "trend-oids" all there are really hyping up Phoenix. Doubt that means anything, but I thought he was incredible myself so I'm gonna throw 20 on him with my local. I'm not even a fan of the guy. Anything he's in I usually turn off instantly, and when I saw he was the star of the new PT Anderson movie, I kinda cringed. But he was really good. I watched the Master twice and it really clicked for me on second viewing.

Regardless, can't see Daniel Day Lewis losing best actor......

A good day to die hard - such a terrible movie with the worst plot

Got to agree with you glyde saw Argo which is about the1979 Iranian hostage crisis.and it was fantastic!  Former Canadian Diplomat, Ken Taylor became an international hero following his success in sheltering the six Americans for three months. The longtime diplomat moved the Americans around to various safe houses finally managing to secure fake Canadian passports for them from Ottawa. I think it's a great reminder to both Americans/Canadians understanding the message of international co-operation and the great relationship we've always had with one another. 

Just watched Django and Silver Linings Playbook in the past couple of weeks, and really like both of them. 

Been wanting to watch Django, as I love Tarantino movies, and it did not disappoint.  Waltz did a great job, but I don't think it was anywhere near the performance he gave in Inglorious Basterds. 

Watched Silver Linings Playbook with the wife last night, and like glyde, I had no idea what to expect going into it.  All I knew was that Bradley Cooper and De Niro were in it.  They both did a great job, and it was everything that glyde described.  Check it out.

I tried to watch the newest bond movie the other night, Sky Fall I think.

I fell asleep in the first hour, wasn't even that fukked up. It was really bad. It was so un-James-Bond-like.

haven't seen it yet BUT just from seeing trailers it looks like the two new "Bond Girls" in this one are NOT up to the standards set by the likes of Ursula Andress, Jane Seymour, Britt Ekland or Holly Berry 

watched Sacha Baron Cohen's The Dictator (2012) last night. typical Cohen loose plot of mostly sight gags and one liners some of which are "stupid funny" but many are just plain crude or offensive. probably worth watching just for the scene on the Helicopter tour where the American couple thinks "President Prime Minister Admiral General" Haffaz Aladeen (Cohen) and his former WMD Director Nadal (Jason Mantzoukas) are ploting another 9-11 attack. THAT was definately the BEST sketch in the whole movie. VERY different kind of movie role for dramatic actor Ben Kingsley as Aladeen's uncle Tamir who is trying to secretly overthrow him.

watched the classic political drama All the King's Men (1949) the other night on Turner Classic Movies. it's loosly based on the life (and  assassination) of  1930's Louisiana Governor Huey Long. stars Broderick Crawford as Willie Stark (the Huey Long character) and John Ireland as his press secretary Jack Burden. won the Best Picture Oscar over others that became classics like Twelve O'Clock High. Crawford, who usually played either a cop or gangster in B-movies up until that time, won Best Actor and Mercedes McCambridge won Best Supporting Actress as the character of Sadie Burke, Stark's "campaign assistant". Ireland, who also usually played either a cop or gangster in B-movies, was nominated for Best Supporting Actor BUT lost to Dean Jagger in Twelve O'Clock High.

VERY well acted movie by all involved and it's worth watching or recording when it's on TCM OR getting from netflix.   

btw, the 2006 re-make with Sean Penn as Stark and Jude Law as Burden got a lot of pre-release Oscar "hype" because of the cast and story BUT ended up a critical and financial flop

I just can't pass up Last Man Standing (1996) when it's on a movie channel. excellent re-make of the Akira Kurosawa classic Yojimbo but set in a Prohibition era small Texas border town. "oodles of ordnance" and pretty much non-stop action. excellent cast with Bruce Willis, Christopher Walken, Bruce Dern, William Sanderson, David Patrick Kelly and a "pre-Sopranos" Michael Imperioli. been running off and on on HBO most of the month

'The Raven' on Netflix instant.

Not a great movie..Pretty decent 'who done it?' type of movie tho'.

Just watched the documentary "Religulous" by Bill Mahr....very entertaining and fairly educational. Bill Mahr is a pretty funny guy, if you are into his kind of stuff 

 

Fuk'n love that movie.
