Movies you saw for the 1st time in August of 2008

Gone Baby Gone

and 1 shutty 1 one Shoot em up...but i guess ill watch em 1st before passing judgment

Just watched Bad Santa. Everyone I heard from absolutely raved about this movie. While I thought it was pretty funny I didn't think it was anything special.

 

Though not a bad movie, Gone Baby Gone was a little disappointing for me. Had fairly high expectations going in.

 

 

The Ruins - Nothing special horror movie with some good gore and a stupid premise.

 

Vantage Point - Decent thriller but the ending was a little too convenient for my tastes.

 

 

The Contract - started out looking like it might be pretty good then fell flat. Surprising with the cast here.

Mr Woodcock- Mildly funny comedy about A guys mother dating a former gym teacher that used to torment him. I actually found it funny except for amy poehler. goddamn i hate that woman.

 

Shoot Em Up- man was this a dumb movie and im embarrassed to say i kind of enjoyed it... good action  but stupid action. Clive Owen vs Paul Giammatti

 

 

Vantage Point was a nice study in film form. A little nudge to remind the viewer that there is never any objectivity to what he is seeing on the screen. Film is an extremely manipulative art form, and the filmmaker decides what "reality" is by what he shows you (or doesn't show you), and when he shows it. I found Vantage Point to be a bit more than just a "decent thriller", and the type of film I should keep in mind the next time I see...ohhh say a Michael Moore "documentary" where most viewers are manipulated into believing that what they are seeing is the "objective truth" because such films are labeled "documentary". Vantage Point illustrates the inherent subjectivity of film and, for that matter, the subjectivity with which we see (and are shown) life in general.

I thought the concept of Vantage Point was very cool but it was too predictable at points and I was a little disappointed with the ending.

Mystic River - Sean Penn, Tim Robbins, Kevin Bacon -

 

About 3 childhood friends who are reunited after a tragedy involving one of them. Very good movie that will keep you interested throughout.

 

Bull Durham - Kevin Coster, Tim Robbins, Susan Sarandon 

 

A baseball movie from the 80's where Costner (who is a veteran player winding down his career) and Sarandon (who is a baseball nut that sleeps with the players) try to mentor Robbins (young pitching prospect) to make him a better/smarter player and get him to the majors. I was surprised at how much I liked it. Good story and was also funny at times.

 

i thought the ending in mystic river was so god awful. i also didnt care for sean penns ridiculous overacting.  movie was good other than that but the ending ruined it for me

Tried to watch Harsh Times with Christian Bale and Freddy Rodirguez...got 30 mins into it and was done. god awful movie. the script sucked it was so f'n boring. It was like the writer said "hey i liked Training Day lets do a shittier written version of one"

 

Usually Bales movies are good but i couldnt stand anymore of this thing

 

 

Pineapple Express - Totally stupid movie, but in a good, funny way.  This movie is strange in that it could've easily went off the tracks a few times and become a dud movie, but there's enough craziness and weirdness going on to keep it from ever getting to that point.  Lot's of really funny scenes as well.

The Mummy 3    Just plain old crap....fell alseep halfway through

Gone Baby Gone- very good movie. Casey Affleck was surprisingly good. Honestly I wasnt super surprised by the plot where you would think i should have been but it was a very good movie. some good suspense and drama. good acting and to me the ending was kinda sad

Cleaner - with Samuel L. Jackson, Ed Harris, and Eva Mendes. Well acted, slow but steady pace.

 

Zoolander- never saw this entire movie. It was pretty funny . Stiller plays a male model who is fueding with Owen Wilson , another male model. Will Ferrel is funny, Jerry Stiller. Dumb , but a good comedy

 

The Brave One- Jodie Foster goes nuts after she and her fiance are attacked in central park. I usually dont care for jodie foster or her movies but this was pretty good. Terrence Howard plays a police officer. Good movie and the ending wasnt bad at all. 

The Kite Runner: Based on the book about two Afghani childhood friends growing up together when one flees to America during the Soviet invasion.  One later returns home to save his friend's son from the Taliban regime.  Pretty decent movie. Recommended by my girlfriend who read the book; I should probably try and read the book to get the entire story accurate, but I hate reading for entertainment.

i just saw Step Brothers and it was hilarious

Shooter... Mark Wahlberg is a sniper and if i tell you the premise it will ruin it. Good action movie . I enjoyed it. Kata Mara needs to be in more things she is gorgeous. tense plot, i liked it.

I thought it was Marl Wahlberg?

 

Waking the Dead - Billy Crudup is an aspiring politician haunted by the memory of his girlfriend, Jennifer Connelly, who died ten years earlier. It was a little weird, definitely different than I expected. Some good drama and suspense leading up to a disappointing ending. Take it or leave it.
