Hello Covers Community. The Derby is two months away and the owners of dozens of 3 year old equine athletes are dreaming of roses. I’m just waiting for the winner of the marquee event of the season in Oldsmar, Florida.
I usually dismiss a horse jumping from a maiden score to a graded stakes. It’s hard enough going from your first win to win an allowance. However, Canaletto looks different. This $1,000,000 colt absolutely jogged in his last. Breaking from an outside post, Flaviet Prat put this horse in a perfect stalking spot early (by choice…Canaletto could have opened up a few lengths). He crossed the wire lengths in front, while under a hold. What got my eye is that Canaletto ran a middle 3 furlongs in 36.3 while under wraps, as Prat moved his hands to engage his mount to make the lead. Nice.
This youngster makes only his second start today. Anything can happen in a horse race. But, off his debut and that he draws outside away from any trouble, I’m on board. The nine post going two turns should be no problem as this guy has “push button” speed.
Good luck all!
