What is the deal with people ransacking store shelves for bread, milk, and eggs before a snowstorm??

Ah yes, let's RUSH to the grocery store like we're running from the Bulls of Pamplona to go out and buy some of the WORST foods in terms of perishables!

I mean, if you get seventeen feet of snow, you need to be able to make french toast right!??!!! That should be your MAIN priority with those crucial ingredients. And don't forget the cinnamon and Mrs. Butterworth!

One of the more confounding human rituals in modern human history.

Anyone on the Northeast Coast expecting the blizzard...Go to your grocery store and those items will be in short supply...You do because they do it and they do because you do it! But there is no rhyme or reason to it!

Never understood it. Maybe some primal instinct kicks in that compels people to think they can survive on bread and milk for 4 or 5 days if snowed in.

I would stock up on beer before a storm when I lived in dc.

I remember when I moved to DC that first storm I went to the grocery store and said to my bud "what on earth, are we in Russia" the shelves were empty with stuff on the floor in places. It was like that every storm. I don't get it. Out west that doesn't happen but in the East and South, where I am now, it always happens.
Then the "storm of the century" usually ends up being a day of snow.

What does perishable have to do with it?  They will only be snowed in a week at most?  Why eat survival rations?

If you know the shelves will be bare, then you need to get their first, has nothing to do with the actual storm.

And nothing is worse than being stuck in your house for 4 days with no food...

I agree Scal.  It's the East Coast and anyone from here should be used to it by now.  Sandy was bad because this the NJ/NYC area are not used to it.  Most costliest storm in history.

My condo complex was one of the lucky few that never lost power, but getting gas was a nightmare.

    I agree on this..

We lived on the east coast two times for a total of 6 years and I would laugh every single time there was a storm to come the grocery stores would get pummeled by fearing residents. It isnt like you live 50 miles from the grocery store, it is at worst 5 miles from your house.

One storm I remember was really bad, huge snow levels, schools cancelled for a few days...STILL why do you need to plan for a weeks plus worth of food when the plows will be out and you will be fine in a day or two or THREE max????

I never understood this way of thinking, it was almost amusing really.

    True story!!

My wife and I moved to Lexington KY - we both grew up in Michigan and spent a few years in Chicago.

I was driving home from work one day when there was a few inches forecasted.  I stopped my Kroger to get a couple things, and the idiots were acting like it was Armageddon.  I mean LOADING up on everything, the shelves were half empty.

I went home and grabbed the wife so we could just watch and laugh at people.  So entertaining.

I know what you mean.  The storm is not supposed to hit us until Saturday morning.

Yesterday around 6:30, I wanted to get something from the hot bar from a local Shop Rite.  I couldn't even get in the parking lot!  Folks, we're only talking about a foot of snow here!  We deal with this sh!t several times each year!  If you have a decent car, you can drive in the snow because the plows are out as soon as a couple of inches accumulate.

I had to settle on Taco Bell

No way was I seeing that sh!t show.

only things that fly off the shelves here in maine during ICE storms,
generators fuel and snowmobile oil and bags of salt . food isn't really pillaged through.

    Hey Scal,

Not relevant to your post, but saw this and figured you'd find it interesting.

    https://www.theguardian.com/sport/blog/2016/jan/22/betting-overload-sport-gambling-captive-audience?CMP=fb_a-sport_b-gdnsport

Gambling proved to be a problem for me unfortunately, so working on quitting. Even so, the ever-increasing marriage between big sports and gambling enterprises is surely a bad thing, even for the likes you responsible bettors. The article is a UK perspective, but of course we've all seen this year's Fan Duel/Draft Kings & NFL relationship blow up. Curious to hear your thoughts!

    Take care.
