What is a league?

Question

I have a question about leagues. When looking at below URL:

https://www.matchbook.com/events/soccer/germany/bundesliga-2/march-21st-2016/331500/freiburg-vs-karlsruher

We can see that the league is: BUNDESLIGA 2

We can see that the teamnames are: FREIBURG VS KARLSRUHER

Question:

I am not exactly sure what leagues mean. Specifically, does this mean that FREIBURG and KARLSRUHER only can play against other teams as well in BUNDESLIGA 2.

I mean can a team that are in BUNDESLIGA 2 only play against other teams in BUNDESLIGA 2 or can a team in BUNDESLIGA 2 play with a team in other leagues?

Both of these teams mainly play in the 2nd tier of the German league, but can play teams in other leagues in Europe during a tournament.

They can play teams from other countries that qualify for the UEFA Europa Cup or the UEFA Cup; depending if they qualify for either.

Hope this helps
