Now, approximately 5 percent of the old-growth coast redwood forest remains. About 75 percent of the remaining old-growth coast redwood forest is now protected in parks and reserves. However, only 29 percent of the entire coast redwood forest, old and young, is currently protected.
The threats to the redwoods are increasingly complex, no longer embodied by the axe and saw. Some of the greatest threats to redwoods today include climate change, human land uses not compatible with forest health (e.g. development, conversion to vineyards); and people’s increasing detachment from the natural world.

Try 2000 years for some of them. It's sad but many of the people in this country have never seen a redwood. Or a Sequoia. They figure a tree is a tree. Not so.
