I last used it four years ago but now I have them done by a pro. But I used to remember how easy and user friendly it was. Kid next door from me asked for help. His should be fairly simple but he has child support and maybe we can find some write offs like church.

So do you guys recommend buying it or is their a better way to go.

I recommend it.  Turbo Tax holds your hand as you do your taxes. 

Assuming that he itemizes his deductions and if he has investments, I believe Turbo Tax charges extra for the Schedule A itemized deductions and Schedule D capital gains/losses.  

If he takes the standard deduction (itemized don't exceed $6,300 if he is filing single status), he will only need to pay a $30 turbo tax fee to file California state.  1040A federal is free.

I use turbo tax for fun . Nothing beat's a Professional oh...and there's no getting out of child support when it comes to taxes except good ole fashion lying ..

ebay is selling turbotax deluxe for $32.

it includes federal and state, and 5 federal e-files, but no state e-file, must pay $20-$25 for state e-file, or can print and mail for free.

and yes, turbotax is pretty good.

In NJ child support is not a write off. Alimony  on the other hand......

You're right Googles.  The way he wrote it, his neighbor is receiving child support and it's a source of income, which is taxable.  Maybe his Ex wore the pants in he family and was the breadwinner before the split.

WHen did child support become taxable?  Is this just a state thing?

 its income , but the Father cant write it off...so why would the Women claim it?

All child support payments would then need to be factored in to alimony.  Otherwise, the kid is living with me.
