I hate this, its an incredibly selfish thing to do, you're not a golfer or tennis play, you play in a team.
If you want to go on a farewell tour, do some exhibition matches AFTER the regular season has ended, you may not be there next year but your team-mates will be. Talk about a distraction for them.
Of course the lakers are gash this year anyway but then Kobe has been phoning it in the last couple of years anyway, if he had hung up his sneakers and given his team some cap room, maybe they'd be more competitive now.

I too am in agreement here, he has totally handcuffed this team financially for last couple years not to mention the team chemistry, frikn Scott doesn't have the balls to sit him, Yes I get it that he deserves a little recognition in some type of farewell across the league but to just let him keep tossing up bricks night after night is totally wrong, just let him start every game and play hard the first qtr then put him in a backup role for the rest of the game, so they can start developing some identity and direction for the young guys

The Lakers didn't have to give him that insane deal. I would have told him to kick rocks. Since when do you get paid for past accomplishments?
Anyway, this whole retirement thing is being overblown. Whether he came out and said it or not, everybody and their mother knew this was his last year. The guy is shooting 30 percent from the field and 20 percent from three. He barely hits rim half the time.

your commentary is on target.... announcing his retirement 15 games into the season is of ludicrous nature to his status; maybe the $25 million he receives for playing his final contractual season has something to do with it, totally classless, and yes, as ballox has stated, 'selfish' on his behalf

that's the way it's done in ( David Ortiz) most cases, what Kobe did just didn't make any sense, I mean who anounces their retirement after the season begins, and then continues to play the remainder of the season? of course there's $25 million involved...Should have kept his mouth shut, went through the motions, and simply retired at the end of the season. case closed

I'm split on this one...I can see how it's a pompous, selfish act with stars who want to have all the attention on them. I can also see how it can be incredibly beneficial to the owners/team management knowing ahead of time. The public announcement can give the fans closure as well knowing that this is it. If he waits to the end of the season when they finish 20-62 and then Kobe says he's done, there will be a lot of fans that will feel like they should have gone out to watch him play one more time, even though he is a dumpster fire right now.
I can also see how it can give a pass to players to take their effort down a few notches. Not that Kobe is wired that way, but nobody expects anything out of him now, and he is given a pass.

Yes he most certainly is, and his 5 rings speaks for theirselves, unfortunately that's not the subject matter of the thread, the question is "why would someone of Kobe's caliber not announce his retirement before the season started, instead of waiting till the team is 15 games in? (which is his perogative) he could of played out his final year with a class act instead of a total team breakdown, showing nothing more than a selfish attitude? either way he still gets his $25 milion..it's called 'integrity', ever hear of it?

Of course I need a delouse comes in and jumps on a chance to feed his self gratifying contrarianism
This really is a selfish thing to do by Kobe but it isn't surprising
Anyone else performing like this would be benched, and actually a team player would bench himself until he turns it around
This isn't like baseball or football where trying your best is almost always good for the team
Kobe is running around taking half the shots and hitting 20-25%. Those shots are taken away from the other players on the team, and even though it's a young team an NBA player has a short career and very limited time to make his money and his mark in the league
It's disgusting what he's doing

C'mon man! Kobe was more integral and won more championships than Derek Jeter, and it was all red carpet when he fukkin' retired. Give the fukkin' guy his due. Love or hate Kobe, he got s#it done and won rings. Granted, it would have been more if he got along with Shaq, but c'mon, you gotta admit, the guy got it done. Are you going to give LeBron the same crap when he does his retirement swansong?

Both Yankees Stars Jeter and Riviera thought they deserved this honor.
"I'm retiring next year so this is my farewell year".
Will Big Papi will get refused this same respect?
Chipper started it
But I have no problem with this. It's incredible for the fans and even the opposing players. Look at all of those young players on the 76ers admire this guy. Kobe may be a shell of himself but when he makes a crazy contested 3, you just have to grin a little bit. Let everyone soak it in. When you're as great as Kobe or Mariano or Jeter, I have no problem with it. It gives fans closure.
With that said...I agree with the points that he should have taken a paycut and has a huge ego and he's not helping the team win games, but hey, they're in this position, they don't have a contending team whether you bench him or not, so let this season play out and hope you pull a Cavs and when you're top player leaves, you get the #1 pick in the lottery and draft a potential superstar in Ben Simmons.

It is stupid and selfish... but that is who Kobe is.
Now the Lakers feel obligated to give him his minutes, while is arguably the very worst player in the NBA and taking $35MM from the Lakers. This will be an awful franchise for the next decade because of this ridiculous unwarranted love for Kobe that the Lakers organization thinks they must do.
I laugh at all of them. Stupid to announce this... Kobe should have announced his retirement a couple years ago. But he is a selfish person.
All that being said, he is one of the very best players I have witnessed in my lifetime... emphasis on the word WAS
