question about capital gains?

lets say i invest in some stocks and make a nice profit. Then say i want to take that profit and reinvest it in a business start up. Are those profits still going to be taxed even though there reinvested?

Yup..

What you are referring to is called a 1099 exchange and that is for real estate exchanges and only special circumstances apply for this kind of exchange, but no capital gains on stock sales are pretty tough to get around unless you have unused losses in the past to claim against the gains.

what about if you have no other income?

You still have to pay. The tax is applied as a percentage of the gain only (the percentage will be different for short and long term gains) and is not affected by your income at all.

yea it's about the source of the money, not the destination. all salaried money is at one percentage, all cap gains is at another.
