This might have something to do with the jackpot being so high. The odds of winning are reduced by almost half since october 2015.
This is from the CA Lottery web site:
The last draw under the previous Powerball field of numbers was October 3, 2015. The first draw under the new field of numbers was October 7, 2015.
Field of numbers
Players previously chose 5 numbers between 1 and 59, now they choose numbers between 1 and 69.
Powerball number
Players now choose 1 number between 1 and 26, previously they choose a number between 1 and 35.
Odds
The overall odds of winning any prize changed from 1 in 31.85 to 1 in 24.87.
The Jackpot odds changed from 1 in 176 million to 1 in 293 million.

The odds 1 in 293m come from the number of possible winning combinations.
Which begs the question... "Why didn't a multi-millionaire, or a group of mathematicians, or a group of ANYBODY, think to buy up all the possible 293m winning combinations?" Even if he, she, they, won the 900m and had to split the jackpot with another winner, he, she, they would still be into a very hefty profit.

no odds come from A tickets chance EVERY possible combination is 35 billion. they use a form of fuzzy math to come up with 292 million.

There are certain things you can control in both Life and Powerball.
I bought all 26 Powerball Numbers with key family numbers.
Additional 4 Qwick-Picks beyond that.
All with the Power-Play of course.
Total of $90 invested.
BUT. Am guaranteed a return of at least $4 Powerball times at least 2X = $8.
Most I can lose on this entire Fiasco is $82 bucks.
But hey, I got 30 tickets to the BIG DANCE.

You can actually place a bet @ 5dimes on whether or not the powerball jackpot will get hit today...
odds:
Powerball Jackpot -1000
No Jackpot Winner +650
so according to the "odds" the JP will most likely hit tonight!
i have actually been half behind following these odds and the NO JACKPOT was like -1200 about a month ago...
my question is why is it all the sudden so much more likely that someone will hit this jackpot? doesnt +650 seem like a great bet?

When the powerball is say at 50 million
There are a combined 500,000 tickets sold.
When the powerball is 1.5 billion
There are a combined 88 million tickets sold.
That's an example
But with the jackpot so high, EVERYONE and their mother [literally] is playing. The more tickets sold the better chance someone will hit. No lottery has ever been played as much as this one. Those were examples.
But saw today that for the four hours leading up to the Powerball drawing, there will be 1million dollars in tickets sold...
EVERY MINUTE!!! WOW.
If theres 700million number combinations, the more tickets sold the better chance that it will hit.
Id say that is a terrible bet , I think it is def gonna hit tonight. But those odds are terrible, and so Is betting on the Powerball as a sportsbet of sorts.

thanks for the explanation, i was thinking it was along these line but didnt realize JUST HOW MANY MORE tickets are going to be played from when it was still a huge jackpot just a month or so ago....
