Mike Ward having to pay for calling disabled teen "ugly"....

ok so first off there are so great people on this site from Canada. But over my years, I have seen SOME Canadians calling people in the US out for being backwards for gambling not being legal, racism and just not having it right like Canada. I present to you an instance of Canada being hilariously backwards. A comic, Mike Ward called a disabled teen, "ugly" in making jokes about him among other things. Not really backing the guy being mean-spirited, but how on earth can he now be forced to pay $42,000 in damages to this family?! I hope someone can explain this to me, as each time I hear about this story, I am flabbergasted.
